Giants Week 17 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on December 29, 2013 – 11:00 am

Where are the Giants ranked?

Giants Lions Football

Tom Coughlin, Jerrell JerniganLooking for a last-minute fantasy add before Sunday’s action begins? The Giants defense may be what your team needs to get over the hump in Week 17.

At No. 18, the unit is the Giants’ highest-ranked group or player heading into the final week of the regular season. In week 16, the team’s defense picked up 15 points and finished No. 6 among the league. It has been ranked inside the top 20 for six of the past seven weeks and finished with 15 or more points four times this season.

Also moving up in this week’s rankings is wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan. With Victor Cruz sidelined with a knee injury, Jernigan has stepped in at the slot and excelled. He scored a career-high 6.7 points in Week 15 before setting another career mark (15) the following week.

Jernigan’s 15 points in Week 16 were the eight-most of any receiver in the league.

After two down weeks in a row, quarterback Eli Manning climbed two spots, from No. 24 to No. 22. Receivers Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle, along with tight end Brandon Myers, also moved up from last week’s rankings.

QUOTABLES

“I think there’s a responsibility to our team to play your best, be your best. There always is. That’s what we’re in this business for, to do the very best we can and not listen to what people tell you about why you’re playing and the questions that you get asked in this situation. It’s our responsibility to play as well as we can, the competitiveness of it, the pride that goes with it, what kind of statement do you make as a man in terms of you living up to your responsibilities and the example you set for others. There’s an awful lot to play for.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

Giants Week 15 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on December 13, 2013 – 2:00 pm

Giants fall in fantasy rankings with Seahawks coming to town.

Victor Cruz

Eli ManningThe fantasy experts predict that quarterback Eli Manning, wide receivers Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Rueben Randle and kicker Josh Brown will all have their worst fantasy games of the season on Sunday when the Giants take on the Seahawks at MetLife Stadium.

All five players earned season-low rankings and two, Manning and Brown, went unranked by multiple sources. But the player to drop the farthest this week was Cruz.

If any Giant has been a consistent fantasy player this season, it’s been Cruz. He has been ranked in the top 10 among the league’s receivers five times this season and is the team’s leading fantasy scorer with 119.3 points but both ESPN and Yahoo warned fantasy owners not to start Cruz against Seattle.

“I actually think the matchup this weekend makes it easy on Cruz owners,” ESPN’s Christopher Harris said. “He hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 4, that’s a much-quoted stat. I haven’t had him outside of my top 15 wide receivers for this season — he’s 25 for me this week.”

Cruz’s average ranking for Week 15 is No. 28, nearly doubling down on his previous season-low of 15. He was ranked as low as No. 40 by CBS.

“I love the Salsa King and I’m one of his biggest apologists but I have to sit him this week,” Yahoo’s Brandon Funston said. “You mentioned the scoring drought, that’s nine straight games without a touchdown. Only once during that span has he gone for double-digit fantasy points so things are not going well.”

Hakeem Nicks

With a stingy group of cornerbacks on deck, Nicks and Randle also fell.

Despite scoring a season-high 13.5 points in the Giants’ Week 14 loss to San Diego, Nicks fell one spot, from No. 41 to No. 42. Randle, who had jumped Nicks in last week’s rankings, also fell, from No. 38 to No. 51.

Randle’s ranking tied season-lows set in Weeks 4 and 5 while Nicks, who had been ranked as high as No. 18, set a new season-low for the second straight week.

Manning (No. 25) was ranked No. 24 by ESPN in Week 14 but had never been ranked lower than No. 20 by all four sources. He went unranked by ESPN, which listed 27 quarterbacks, and CBS, which listed 25.

The only source to rank Brown this week was Yahoo, which listed him at No. 25. His average ranking for Week 15 is No. 24 but it didn’t hurt that he finished in a tied for 16th by FOX, which only listed 15 kickers.

Giants Week 14 fantasy results

Posted by Joe Kania on December 11, 2013 – 1:21 pm

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was the Giants’ top-scoring fantasy player in Week 14.

Hakeem Nicks

There were high expectations for Hakeem Nicks heading into the 2013 season.

He was ranked as the No. 18 fantasy wide receiver in the league by ESPN in their preseason fantasy rankings and many expected, in a contract year, that 2013 might be one of Nicks’ best years with Big Blue.

That hasn’t happened.

Nicks averages just 5.6 fantasy points per game and has a grand total of 78.9 points on the season, the 48th-most in the league. Teammates Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz both have more points on the season with 91.6 and 119.3, respectively.

WEEK 14 FANTASY RANKINGS

But despite his struggles, Nicks strung together one of his best games yet in Week 14 as the Giants fell, 37-14, to San Diego.

He scored 13.5 points, the 16th-most in the league, catching five balls for 135 yards. Nicks fell just .7 points of his season high, 14.2 points, that he set back in Week 5 against the Eagles. The only other game where surpassed 10 points was Week 1 (11.4).

“Each week I strap it up and I am ready to go,” Nicks said after the loss. “I had a lot more opportunities today and I wanted to take advantage of it.”

He also hauled in a 43-yard Hail Mary at the end of the first half and to to his surprise, didn’t land in the end zone. Had he crossed the goal line, it would have been his first score of the season.

“I knew I was going to get it,” said Nicks. “I thought I was in the end zone until I got up and everybody was just looking at me. I was thinking why isn’t anyone celebrating?”

Despite Nicks’ efforts, the Giants’ loss eliminated the team from playoff contention. He has three more games in a Giants uniform before his rookie contract expires.

“It’s difficult but it’s reality,” Nicks said. “Only thing we can do now is control playing these last three games to really show what we are made of. I don’t like it by a stretch, but it’s reality like I said and we have to face it.”

Giants Week 12 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on November 22, 2013 – 1:00 pm

ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX break down this week’s fantasy football rankings.

Rueben Randle

For the first time this season, Rueben Randle earned a higher fantasy ranking than fellow wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks.

The gap had been closing in the past weeks; Nicks was No. 30 in Week 11 and Randle was No. 36. Although both earned an average ranking of No. 26 in Week 12, Randle edged Nicks out, 104 to 105, between ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX’s fantasy football rankings.

Randle was also selected by Yahoo’s Brandon Funston as his Player of the Week for Week 12.

“Definitely put Rueben Randle in your lineup this week,” Funston said. “The guy has had six touchdowns in his last six games and when you look back to what he did against the Cowboys in Week 1, he had five catches and 101 yards. That was his most on the season. The Cowboys give up the most passing yards per game in the league so Rueben Randle, too hot to handle for the Cowboys defense, he is my starter at the wide receiver position this week.”

Funston and Yahoo! awarded Randle his highest ranking of all four sources at No. 20.

WEEK 11 FANTASY RESULTS

But the team’s highest-ranked receiver is still Victor Cruz.

Cruz, No. 9,  found his way back into the top 10 for the first time since Week 8 and was ranked as high as No. 7 by FOX. In the Giants’ Week 1 matchup against Dallas, Cruz scored a season-high 29.8 points and finished as the league’s No. 3 receiver.

Quarterback Eli Manning moved up seven spots, from No. 19 to No. 17, and was ranked No. 8 by FOX while running back Andre Brown landed an average ranking of No. 10 for the second week in a row.

Here’s a look at this week’s fantasy rankings. This week’s ranking is listed in parentheses. +/- indicates the difference between this week’s rankings and last week’s:

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: GIANTS VS. PACKERS

“Good to win. I thought we did some things well tonight. There’s obviously more to be done. Special teams had a better night, no doubt. Rueben had the nice punt return, which helped right off the bat. Felt we should have scored when we were down there in the first half and came away with no points, felt we should have scored there. In the second half, the battle went back and forth. We got a little bit of rushing yardage, not a lot. We did a great job against them as well, which we have done all year against the run, against a very good back, and a very good offensive line as well. We were plus-two in turnovers. I was pleased with that. I think we had three penalties, I was pleased with that as well. So, we are very, very happy to win at home against a very good team.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“Going into this game we have a young quarterback, established offensive line, big time running back who’s a load, a hard tackle you have to swarm. We were able to stop the run and sure enough, kid comes out and makes huge plays in the passing game. We wanted to put the pressure on him, but he was able to make plays, but we stayed the course and we got some turnovers late and that was able to affect the outcome of the game.” -LB Jon Beason

“I think it was a good job by everybody on the offense, just knowing their assignments.  I think we ran the ball well and they did a good job to stop the run so we did a good job of throwing short passes.  Getting Brandon Myers into it, getting our backs into it on some screens, getting them out of the backfield. Linebackers are dropping deep trying to take away the receivers.  I think that’s what you have to do for an offense to be successful.  Everybody has to know their assignments and be in the right places.   If you want to take away throws down the field, then you’re going to have to throw underneath a few times to open things up down the field for big plays later on.” -QB Eli Manning

“I knew that it was a touchdown.  As soon as I caught it, I knew it was a touchdown.  I’m not a receiver or anything, but I knew it was a touchdown. ” -DE Jason Pierre-Paul

GIANTS FANTASY RANKINGS: WEEK 4

Eli ManningFor the second week in a row, the Giants players are falling in the fantasy rankings, most notably quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.

Manning fell from No. 12 in Week 3 to No. 19 and was bumped down 11 spots by both Yahoo and Fox after he failed to find the end zone in the Giants’ 38-0 loss to Carolina last weekend. He finished with 4.16 points, No. 31 among quarterbacks.

WEEK 3 FANTASY RESULTS

Nicks failed to score any fantasy points in Week 3, the first time he’s done so in 2012, and dropped eight spots, from No. 19 to No. 27. Week 4 is the first time Nicks has been ranked outside of the top 20.

But his fellow receiver, Victor Cruz, is still flirting on the edge of the top 10. Cruz, No. 11, dropped a spot from last week but hasn’t been ranked lower than No. 12 this season. Cruz led the league in receiving in Week 1 when his three touchdown receptions translated into 29.8 fantasy points.

The only areas the Giants did not regress were at tight end and on defense as Brandon Myers (No. 14) and the team’s defense (No. 25) earned the same ranking for the second week in a row.

Here’s a look at this week’s fantasy rankings. This week’s ranking is listed in parentheses.

Accustomed to having fans chant their names, three Giants had their roles reversed on Wednesday night in the Bronx.

David Wilson, Rueben Randle, and Bear Pascoe took in the Yankees game against the Seattle Mariners with the Bleacher Creatures, assisting “Bald” Vinny Milano and the fan group in the “Roll Call” tradition.

“I’ve never witnessed anything like that. One guy screaming and the whole crowd is involved,” Wilson, a Virginia native, told MLB.com. “This was my first time being a part of something like that.”

Before the game, which the Yankees lost 12-2, the Giants trio toured the stadium and watched from the field during pregame warm-ups.

“It was really fun. That was the first time I got to be there at that level and just to see guys getting ready and preparing for the game and getting ready to go out,” Pascoe said.

“It was pretty neat. It was pretty similar to us before a game – we go out and each guy does his own thing and does what he has to do to prepare for the game.”

That included batting practice, where Wilson believed he could hit one out of the park if given some time.

“Give me a little while, a little practice,” he said. “[Give me] about a week.”

Randle, a fellow second-year draft pick, disagreed.
