ELI MANNING SET TO SURPASS PHIL SIMMS AS GIANTS’ ALL-TIME LEADING PASSER

With 214 passing yards on Monday night, Eli Manning could surpass Phil Simms as the Giants’ all-time leading passer.

Over 14 seasons, from 1979-1993, Simms compiled 33,462 passing yards, 199 touchdowns and 157 interceptions. Manning, midway through his 10th season as the team’s signal-caller, has thrown for 33,248 yards, 220 touchdowns and 159 interceptions.

Already the team’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns and interceptions, Manning, should he play 14 season as Simms did, is on pace to throw for 46,547 yards, 265 touchdowns and 223 interceptions.

Should he reach those numbers, he would finish his career as the No. 8 quarterback all-time in terms of passing yards, No. 11 in passing touchdowns and No. 16 in interceptions.

But those numbers could certainly be higher should Manning play longer than 14 seasons.

Here’s a look at a few other Giants approaching milestones:

» RB Brandon Jacobs: One shy of 60 career touchdowns

» WR Victor Cruz: Two shy of 25 career touchdowns

» WR Hakeem Nicks: Three shy of 30 career touchdowns

» DE Justin Tuck: 10 shy of 300 career tackles

» DE Jason Pierre-Paul: One and a half shy of 30 career sacks

» S Antrel Rolle: One shy of 50 career passes defended

» CB Corey Webster: One shy of 330 career tackles

QUOTABLES

“Field position, the frustration of not getting the short field and then when we’ve gotten the short field, we haven’t done much with it.  It’s disturbing.  The turnovers, you can talk all you want, but it has to happen.  It has to happen on the field.  Take care of the ball, get the ball away from the other guy, get yourself in some field position, take advantage of it. ” -Coach Tom Coughlin

Phil Simms: Eli and Coughlin belong in HOF

Posted by Dan Salomone on August 2, 2012 – 2:18 pm

From one Giants’ championship quarterback to another, Phil Simms thinks Eli Manning is bound for Canton.

He said as much in a USA TODAY article, where Simms, the franchise leader in passing yards and touchdowns, reiterated how far Manning has come from the days people questioned him and his coach.

“Here we were five years ago, before the Giants won their first Super Bowl, and all the talk that year was maybe the Giants need to bring another quarterback in and Tom Coughlin’s in trouble,” Simms told USA TODAY Sports.”Now they both absolutely one day will go in the Hall of Fame.

“Eli has been a real clutch quarterback. When you talk about why, never underestimate who he plays for and how he’s been groomed.”

Over the offseason following Super Bowl XLVI, Manning said his arrow is still pointing up and there’s no slowing down anytime soon.

Simms agreed.

“There’s no doubt his best football is still ahead,” Simms says. “With two Super Bowl MVPs, two game-winning drives in the Super Bowl, his confidence deep inside is as good as anybody’s.

“Now, from proving it so many times on the field, the true Eli is coming out.
