Giants Week 14 fantasy results

Posted by Joe Kania on December 11, 2013 – 1:21 pm

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was the Giants’ top-scoring fantasy player in Week 14.

Hakeem Nicks

There were high expectations for Hakeem Nicks heading into the 2013 season.

He was ranked as the No. 18 fantasy wide receiver in the league by ESPN in their preseason fantasy rankings and many expected, in a contract year, that 2013 might be one of Nicks’ best years with Big Blue.

That hasn’t happened.

Nicks averages just 5.6 fantasy points per game and has a grand total of 78.9 points on the season, the 48th-most in the league. Teammates Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz both have more points on the season with 91.6 and 119.3, respectively.

WEEK 14 FANTASY RANKINGS

But despite his struggles, Nicks strung together one of his best games yet in Week 14 as the Giants fell, 37-14, to San Diego.

He scored 13.5 points, the 16th-most in the league, catching five balls for 135 yards. Nicks fell just .7 points of his season high, 14.2 points, that he set back in Week 5 against the Eagles. The only other game where surpassed 10 points was Week 1 (11.4).

“Each week I strap it up and I am ready to go,” Nicks said after the loss. “I had a lot more opportunities today and I wanted to take advantage of it.”

He also hauled in a 43-yard Hail Mary at the end of the first half and to to his surprise, didn’t land in the end zone. Had he crossed the goal line, it would have been his first score of the season.

“I knew I was going to get it,” said Nicks. “I thought I was in the end zone until I got up and everybody was just looking at me. I was thinking why isn’t anyone celebrating?”

Despite Nicks’ efforts, the Giants’ loss eliminated the team from playoff contention. He has three more games in a Giants uniform before his rookie contract expires.

“It’s difficult but it’s reality,” Nicks said. “Only thing we can do now is control playing these last three games to really show what we are made of. I don’t like it by a stretch, but it’s reality like I said and we have to face it.”

Giants Week 12 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on November 22, 2013 – 1:00 pm

ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX break down this week’s fantasy football rankings.

Rueben Randle

For the first time this season, Rueben Randle earned a higher fantasy ranking than fellow wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks.

The gap had been closing in the past weeks; Nicks was No. 30 in Week 11 and Randle was No. 36. Although both earned an average ranking of No. 26 in Week 12, Randle edged Nicks out, 104 to 105, between ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX’s fantasy football rankings.

Randle was also selected by Yahoo’s Brandon Funston as his Player of the Week for Week 12.

“Definitely put Rueben Randle in your lineup this week,” Funston said. “The guy has had six touchdowns in his last six games and when you look back to what he did against the Cowboys in Week 1, he had five catches and 101 yards. That was his most on the season. The Cowboys give up the most passing yards per game in the league so Rueben Randle, too hot to handle for the Cowboys defense, he is my starter at the wide receiver position this week.”

Funston and Yahoo! awarded Randle his highest ranking of all four sources at No. 20.

WEEK 11 FANTASY RESULTS

But the team’s highest-ranked receiver is still Victor Cruz.

Cruz, No. 9,  found his way back into the top 10 for the first time since Week 8 and was ranked as high as No. 7 by FOX. In the Giants’ Week 1 matchup against Dallas, Cruz scored a season-high 29.8 points and finished as the league’s No. 3 receiver.

Quarterback Eli Manning moved up seven spots, from No. 19 to No. 17, and was ranked No. 8 by FOX while running back Andre Brown landed an average ranking of No. 10 for the second week in a row.

Here’s a look at this week’s fantasy rankings. This week’s ranking is listed in parentheses. +/- indicates the difference between this week’s rankings and last week’s:

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: GIANTS VS. EAGLES

“Good to win in our division. It’s not always pretty but nevertheless our defense played superbly. And I thought in the second half we benefited from great field position, which forced two or three three-and-outs, which prevented them from being able to drive the ball the way they wanted to. The three turnoverswere big. I don’t know what to say about the snap from center. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him [LS Zak DeOssie] do that, not even on the practice field. And the timing was terrible. But nevertheless the first down there at the end with [TE Brandon] Myers was big. We put ourselves in position to make acouple plays at the end. They had no more time outs and of course [SS] Will Hill came through with that play. The first half I thought we really had an awful lot of things going for us; time of possession, I’m not sure exactly what it was but I know it was quite a bit in our favor. But in the first half, regardless of the style, the way that they operated and how fast they play, I thought we did a good job of hanging on to the ball, driving into plus territory. We did settle for field goals which we’re going to have to look at that. Two of those were touchdowns and this didn’t have to finish quite as tight as it did. Nevertheless, we won and we’re excited about winning. That’s two games in a row we’ve won. We’ve played great defense, we really haven’t given up a score, defensively, and there is a lot to be said for the way we are playing right now on defense.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“One thing I understand about being a New York Giant is you have to be even keel through the great days and the not-so-great ones and I think that’s where this football team has been. When we were 0-6, and if you went in the locker room, you couldn’t tell that we were 0-6. This team has always stuck together and always been positive. Right now we understand that we are kind of on a little win streak here but we must be humble and understand that we have a long way to go.  So we can’t worry about what Dallas does or what any team does. We just have to continue to put the blinders on and take one opponent at a time.” -DE Justin Tuck

“I think we did a lot of good things, had a lot of great drives. Moving the ball in the first half and moving the ball right up the field a number of times. We were close on a number of plays that could have been touchdowns, a few plays out of the end zone on some fade balls and different things. We have to get better at that, we have to start converting those into touchdowns and not settling for three points and keeping teams in the game, which we could have built a big lead early, and ran away with this thing—and then towards the end a few big third down conversions. There were some good things. Obviously we’re not making the mistakes that we were making earlier in the season. We’re not turning the ball over, but we still have to find a way to finish the games a little better.” -QB Eli Manning

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: GIANTS VS. VIKINGS

“We came into the game; obviously we had to stop the run. We did a good job of that. I think they had 30 yards rushing. We had 32 attempts, not a lot of yards, but we were able to continue to try and run the ball, which I think helps balance it out much better for us. We had the one turnover on the punt, which was just fundamentals. The ball was in the inside arm and the ball came out over there. We got one back, which was nice. It was a point blank type of a play. Peyton Hillis did an outstanding job of coming on right off of the workout, into a uniform, and right on the field. He did a good job. Michael Cox did his role and his part as well. We didn’t have the turnovers, we got a couple, we got the ball down inside, we’d like to score touchdowns there when we kicked field goals, but we were trying to get to a point where we were at least up two touchdowns. So, obviously it’s nice to win and hopefully it’ll give us some excitement, some enthusiasm, about coming to work this week, a short week preparing to play  in the division this weekend.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“This is a resilient bunch, I’ve been saying that all year long. We fight, scratch and we’re going to do everything we can to kind of be in that game right at the very end and try to be in the position to win this thing. We just pulled through, fought through every play, every time. Even when things weren’t going our way a couple of times throughout the game, we just kept fighting.” -WR Victor Cruz

“I thought we got off to a good start on the opening drive with 17 plays and we ran out 10 minutes. I hated that we had to settle for a field goal because we just missed Hakeem there for a touchdown. It would have been a good way to start the game, but I thought we at least ran the clock and wore out their defense a little bit and did those things, but I thought we ran the ball well. It was efficient. We didn’t have limited yards and we were getting some positive yards. We got in some third-and-(manageable) situations and we were able to convert those. There were some good plays and some really good things, and most importantly, no turnovers on the offensive side. Defense played outstanding and continued to do their job, and we made enough plays to win the game.” -QB Eli Manning

“I think I’m going to be a little sore tomorrow, but it was great to get out there and run that football and play in front of the New York crowd like that, it was spectacular.” -RB Peyton Hillis
