Giants move up in post-draft power rankings
Posted by on May 2, 2013 – 9:00 amWith the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, the Giants find themselves up in ESPN’s latest power rankings released this week, climbing two spots to No. 12.
In the post-draft poll, the Giants landed right behind the Washington Redskins, who moved up the same amount to No. 11. Meanwhile, the Cowboys, who face the Giants in the season opener in four months, fell to No. 20 (previously 18), and the Eagles moved up one spot to 25th.
Over on NFL.com, the Giants cracked the top 10, moving up one spot and passing the Redskins right at No. 10. Dallas dropped two places to 18th, and Philadelphia jumped to No. 23.
The Giants drafted seven players last weekend — four on the offensive and defensive lines – to build on a 2012 team that finished 9-7 but fell short of the playoffs a season after winning it all.

CB Aaron Ross readies for faster division
Posted by on April 8, 2013 – 9:00 amThe NFC East has picked up a few steps since Aaron Ross last played in it. During his stint in Jacksonville, Robert Griffin III emerged with Washington, and the Eagles this offseason ushered in their new coach Chip Kelly, known for his up-tempo offense.
But speed is no stranger to Ross.
His wife and fellow University of Texas product, Sanya Richards-Ross, is a four-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field, and trains in Waco, home of Griffin’s alma mater of Baylor. So Ross knows world-class speed when he sees it, and knows it will be a faster division than the one he last faced as a member of the Giants in the 2011 Super Bowl run.
“It’s always strong, it’s a fierce rivalry every week when you’re playing against the NFC East,” Ross said recently on NFL Network. “Like RGIII, my wife trains in Waco, and I had a chance to see him train when he was in college. So he’s a beast and he’s come into the league and is pretty much ripping it up. And Philadelphia is always good and the Cowboys always have a stacked roster, so you never know what to expect from those guys. The NFC East is a great division to play in. It seems like it’s always a primetime game.”
Having four Pro Bowl quarterbacks in the division only ups that excitement level for cornerbacks like Ross, who also talked about what future players at his position can expect in a pass-heavy NFL.
“It’s a passing league, so I think it’s a great time for a competitive corner to come into the league,” Ross said with the NFL Draft later this month. “You need about four or five corners on your roster, so it’s a great time for corners. Coming into the league, you have great receivers, of course great quarterbacks, and you get a chance to show your skills off.

Tom Coughlin prepares for new NFC East
Posted by on February 26, 2013 – 9:00 amAs Tom Coughlin prepares for the 2013 season, he will do so as the head coach with the most experience within the NFC East for the first time.
With Andy Reid’s departure from Philadelphia, Coughlin’s nine years in the division with the Giants now trump the other three teams who have all seen turnover in the past three years.
Reid previously held the Eagles post since 1999.
“Andy is a good friend of mine,” Coughlin said Friday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. “He went through a tremendous personal loss, very difficult season for him. Our hearts went out to Andy and his family, Tammy. He’s an excellent football coach. It’s very difficult to think that he was there for 14 years and probably won 70% of his games; I don’t know what the exact number is, but (he’s) just an outstanding football coach, outstanding person.
“It’s an unusual thing to say, but to not have him in the division, I’ll miss him. He’s on the Madden Committee and I’m on the Madden Committee, so we got the chance to spend some time together this week. It was good. I’m happy for him and his family. I’m sure he’s looking forward to his new adventure.”
Reid, who took over the reins in Kansas City, was replaced by Chip Kelly, the decorated coach from the University of Oregon. Before his time in Eugene, Kelly was in the coaching ranks at his alma mater of New Hampshire.
“I know Chip from his days at New Hampshire and the tremendous job he did at Oregon,” Coughlin said. “We interviewed him at one point here in New York and he’s done a superior job and he’s an outstanding football coach. He’s going to make it interesting.”
With the coaching changes come new schemes and new players. Just like the division had to try to solve Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris of the defending division champ Washington, teams will anticipate what Kelly will bring to the field this season.
Coughlin was asked if he’s working with defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to figure out a way to stop the read-option.
“You said it as well as I could,” he continued. “Absolutely, right in our division. It’d be foolish not to. We’re doing as much as we can.”
