Time: 12:07, 4th QTR
Defense: Cover 2
Situation: Giants leading 42-27

The Play: Drew Brees pass deep middle intended for Jimmy Graham INTERCEPTED by Stevie Brown at NYG 8. S.Brown pushed ob at NO 22 for 70 yards (Jermon Bushrod).

What Brown saw: “I have Web [cornerback Corey Webster], who’s the Cover 2 corner. He doesn’t have anything in the flat, so he can stay onto the No. 1 receiver a little bit longer. [Linebacker Michael] Boley is my hook dropper underneath No. 2. So as the Cover 2 safety, I’m reading both these [receivers] and I’m looking and see Brees – it just happened so quick. It happened so quick to talk about it. So whenever I’m back here in Cover 2, you want to make sure you have a good amount of depth so you can be able to break either way because there are two receivers that are going to be your threat, threatening your zone.”

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='00858c4a-585d-4944-8b2b-e64e05652a53' data-width='400' data-alignment='right' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='right' />

Intended for TE Jimmy Graham: “Since he threw it to Graham — with him being like 6-6 or so, a basketball player, he can jump pretty high – the ball is usually thrown up there for him to get him and only him to get it. So I wanted to be able to make sure I came around him to pick off the ball without colliding into him.”

On the 70-yard return: “They say go to the near sideline, but I had to cut it back because there was more green grass. I see [Justin] Tuck pick up the fullback, Prince [Amukamara] pick up the quarterback, and 74 [Bushrod] is the fastest offensive lineman in the game.”

Outcome: Four plays after Brown’s seventh interception of the season, Lawrence Tynes tacked on a 39-yard field goal, extending the lead to 45-27. The Giants eventually won 52-27.

QB Eli Manning
On focusing on the upcoming game…
“It was interesting. Obviously a lot of wind and some water coming through, but we made it through safely, the most important thing. Now the focus is obviously getting ready to play a football game. So it’s good to get everybody back in here and get the team together and understand we’ve got to get ready to play a game.”

LB Mark Herzlich
On possibly taking more snaps during the game…
“I am. As I said earlier, it’s a lot of the same preparation I mean I’m always prepared to go in if need be, but the practice preparation will be a lot different. You know, getting the snaps during practice and getting mentally and physically more prepared to be in the game.”

LB Michael Boley
On spending more time together at the Giants facilities after the storm…
“I think it brings everyone closer together, you see guys come in, checking on each other, seeing if everything is alright, you know ‘How’s your family doing?’. I think stuff like that, brings us closer as a group.”

A common saying in football circles is if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.

That’s not the case in San Francisco.

Let there be no confusion: Alex Smith is and will be the go-to man under center. Just last week he led the 49ers offense to a franchise-record 621 yards against the Buffalo Bills, improving his passer rating to 108.7. But along the road to their 4-1 start, there has been a growing package for backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick. This is becoming known as the “Wild Kap.”

The 49ers have schemed their 2011 second-round draft pick out of Nevada-Reno into the offense this season, primarily coming in the form of the triple option. From there, Kaepernick has rushed nine times in the past two games, finding the end zone in both. This package was not in place the last time the Giants faced them and is part of an overall effort to improve the offense from a year ago.

“I think they’ve added some – ‘trick’ is not the right word – some scheming problems to complement what they did last year,” Justin Tuck said. “They have some things in there that look exactly one way and it’s a complete opposite from what that play was supposed to look like. So I think their coaching staff did a great job of putting in a scheme that can confuse defenses at times, but the biggest thing is just playing more physical. That’s what they respect. That’s what they know. The teams that have had success with them have done that.”

Although he did not play in the second and third games of the season (which included their only loss to Minnesota in Week 3), Kaepernick has rushed 10 times for 106 yards in 2012 and has completed one of two passes for seven yards.

It’s just another wrinkle for the Giants to study when preparing for the No. 1 rushing offense in the NFL, which averages 195.8 yards per game and has outscored its last two opponents, 79-3.

“He just adds a different aspect, kind of like when we played Carolina,” Michael Boley said in reference to Cam Newton, whom the Giants held to six yards on six rushing attempts in a Week 3 victory. “He turns into a running back, and it gives them that read zone option. It gives them the ability to do that. And they had some success with that the last couple weeks.”

CB Michael Coe
Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
“I’m real calm, I like to be chill so, I don’t listen to a lot of crazy music. You know what I listened to last game? Welcome to the Jungle.”

TE Martellus Bennett
(Listens to everything)
“What don’t I have on my iPod should be the question. Before the game, I’m going to listen to Curren$y, a little Fiona Apple, maybe some Ellie Goulding and Erykah Badu.”

LB Mark Herzlich
Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
“Basically I like to listen to death metal before the games, so that gets me pretty jacked up before the game. But like when we’re going through warm-ups, I love when Call Maybe comes on. I freaking love Call Me Maybe.”

LB Spencer Paysinger
Childish Gambino – Camp (Album)
“Mine’s not as extravagant as [Herzlich's]. I’m more of a fan of Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, G.O.O.D Music, like Kanye [West], stuff like that. It’s more lyrical. It makes me slow the game down, think of my assignments and stuff.”

LB Michael Boley
SiriusXM Radio – The Heat
“Nothing really specific, I listen to a lot of different stuff. It just depends on what I’m feeling at the moment…SiriusXM, The Heat, whatever comes on.”

From week to week, opponent to opponent, players are given a scouting report in a white binder. You can imagine the heftiness as it has to be thick enough to fit each detail Tom Coughlin and his coaching staff have combed over in studying the upcoming team.

The aggregation of intel, however, is somewhat limited when it comes to new regimes.

That’s the case in Tampa Bay, where Greg Schiano is in his first year as an NFL head coach along with a new staff. For that, Coughlin went back to college.

“We watched all the Rutgers film,” Coughlin said about facing Schiano, who coached the Scarlet Knights from 2001-11. “In all three phases. Of course, we watched all the preseason games. They continue to have a good scheme.”

However, the NFL is a whole different ballgame, and an eight-year vet like linebacker Michael Boley has seen the curve balls when playing against a new coach.

“Facing a new head coach kind of keeps you on your toes as far as what you’re going to get,” said Boley, who played for two first-year head coaches himself with the Atlanta Falcons between 2005 and 2008. “Most coaches, from year to year, they kind of have staples as far as things they’re used to – what’s their identity, so to speak. So facing a new coach, early on it’s kind of throwing everybody off because you don’t really know what to expect.”

Meanwhile, the Giants have studied the Bucs’ 2012 preseason (Tampa went 2-2) and their Week 1 victory. So what have the Giants seen so far?

“We saw a very tough, physical team,” Boley said. “They set the tone early, saying, ‘You know what, we’re a new team and we’re going to hit you in your mouth.’ They did a good job of that.”
