Before players report for their first workouts of the 2013 season on Monday, Mathias Kiwanuka first helped a cause that hit close to home. The versatile defender for the Giants teamed up with the American Cancer Society as part of its “Treat the Pain” program and recently traveled to Uganda, raising awareness about suffering in developing countries with low access to pain relief.

PHOTOS: Kiwanuka visits Uganda to raise awareness

Through the program, Kiwanuka, whose grandfather, Benedicto Kiwanuka, was the first Prime Minister of Uganda, was accompanied by his wife, Tessa, and award-winning filmmaker, Casey Neistat. During the trip in the first week of April, they visited patients, clinicians, and local organizations to learn how to provide inexpensive, effective pain medication.

“Uganda is a special place to me and my family,” said Kiwanuka, who still has relatives in the country. “I look forward to working with Treat the Pain to highlight the global disparities in access to pain relief and learning about the progress Uganda is making to alleviate suffering.

“The Society estimates that nearly three million people die each year around the world in pain from cancer or HIV without access to relief. I hope that our involvement raises the profile of the issue and prompts people to do something.”

With projects in Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, India, and Haiti, Treat the Pain has worked with partners to provide 2.6 million days of treatment for patients in need since 2011.

Safety Antrel Rolle
On if the game will be a tough, physical battle…
“That’s the way it’s been, that’s the way it’s always going to be. Two physical teams, two physical defenses going about them and that’s the way it always goes down between us.”

RB Ahmad Bradshaw
On how the 49ers defense looks…
“They’re physical, they shed blocks well and they retreat well if the ball gets behind them. They’re physical and like I said, we’re up for that task.”

LB Mathias Kiwanuka
On what he sees from the 49ers…
“That’s what you see when you watch them on film. Defensively, they’ve got a tendency to get into a mode where they can dominate and their offense is very effective…both sides of the ball, we’ve got to make sure we play our strongest game.”

Last night, the Giants fell to the Eagles 19-17 in Philadelphia. Here’s what players were talking about in the locker room the morning after.

QB Eli Manning on moving on after the loss…
“We’re 2-2 right now, it’s not the ideal situation but you know, it could be a lot worse. Philadelphia is 3-1, we’re not far out. There’s a lot of football to be played. We still got four more divisional games, it’s a lot of football left. Hey, we got to worry about Cleveland and get back to winning. There’s no point getting down now. Everybody knows we’re going to see Philadelphia the last game of the regular season. I have a feeling that’s going to be a big game for us.”

LB Mathias Kiwanuka on feelings after watching game tape the morning after…
“You’re obviously upset about it, each individual sees those plays they could have made…so maybe a little bit of anger, but we’ll take that anger and put it into next week.”

RB David Wilson on his big kick returns…
“I think the guys in front of me did an excellent job in setting it up and getting on their guys. Coach always says you get a good return back there, guys get more motivated to block…so hopefully we can keep it going.”

“It’s a great atmosphere. It really is, it’s tough and it’s loud and the fans are unique. It can be a fun place to play, and we just got to go in there and we got to have great communication between our offensive line…I got to be loud and if we’re making checks and making different calls, everyody’s got to be on the same page. It always makes the experience of playing in Philadelphia very interesting.”

WR Hakeem Nicks
“I’m definitely looking forward to Philly, it’s a big game for us; rivalry game. They know us, we know them and I’m looking forward to it.”

WR Victor Cruz
“It’s pretty crazy. Obviously those fans don’t like us very much and they make sure we hear it every time we’re out there, we’re warming up and coming out of the tunnel. Every snap, every play, it’s intense. You can cut the tension with a knife in the stadium. It’s always a great place to play when you’re under that pressure and you feel good about and you want to go out there and make a play.”

LB Mathias Kiwanuka
“There’s always an emphasis when you have two teams in the division that we’re rivals, we see each other twice a year every year. We know that our playoff hopes could come down to this game, they feel the same way. They don’t need anymore motivation, and neither do we. We know we have to win this game and they feel the same way so that’s all the motivation we need.”

Former NFL team executive and current NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi ranked such individuals in his annual list of blue-chip/red-chip players and coaches.

In total, seven members from the defending Super Bowl champions made the cut. But first, here’s a look at Lombardi’s qualifications:

Definition of a blue-chip player

» Demonstrates rare abilities and creates mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game.

» Is a premier player in the league and a weapon on the field.

» Combines competitiveness and skill to provide a consistent championship-level performance.

» Rates in the top five at his position in the league.

Definition of a red-chip player

» Has abilities that can create mismatches vs. most opponents in the league.

» Is a featured player on his team and has an impact on the outcome of the game.

» Can’t be taken out of the game in a one-on-one matchup.

» Is consistent from week to week.

» Plays at a championship level.

» Rates in the top 10 at his position in the league.

With that said, two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning was considered a blue-chip quarterback, along with Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger. Wide receiver Victor Cruz and guard Chris Snee rounded out the three Giants on offense receiving blue-chip labels at their respective positions.

On defense, Jason Pierre-Paul was the lone blue-chipper, while Lombardi considered Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka as red-chip players.

Tom Coughlin also earned a blue chip, joining Mike McCarthy (Packers), Bill Belichick (Patriots), Jim Harbaugh (49ers), and John Harbaugh (Ravens).

0:00 — Bears 7, Giants 3 (key stat: Wilson piles up 66 total yards)

1:47 — Bears get on the board with a 21-yard passing touchdown. BEARS 7, GIANTS 3.

5:13 — Tynes makes a 32-yard field goal. Tynes now 6/6 this preseason, hitting four last week. GIANTS 3, BEARS 0 (drive: 8 plays, 72 yards, 4:07)

8:34 — Wilson shakes off a handful of tacklers for a gain of 20. Follows up with a gain of 15 also on the ground. Wilson again with a reception for another 29 yards. Crowd applauding the effort. Fans and coaches have to be excited.

9:19 — Douglas calls fair catch on his second punt return of the night. Can’t get anything going yet, but looks confident back there.

10:18 — Run defense picks up where it left off vs. the Jets. Mathias Kiwanuka makes a nice move into the backfield and stops Bears RB Matt Forte for a loss of 2.

12:13 — Rookie RB David Wilson, starting in place of Ahmad Bradshaw, gets a heavy dosage on the opening drive — run of 5 yards and a short reception for a loss of 3 on the first two plays of the game.

13:36 — Giants force a three-and-out on their first defensive stand. David Douglas returns the punt for 1 yard.

15:00 — Game Day Captains: LB Mathias Kiwanuka, OT David Diehl, LB Spencer Paysinger. Bears win coin toss and elect to receive. Giants will defend west goal.
