*Keith Rivers gets the start at linebacker. That’s the fourth time of the season for Rivers in seven games played.

14:50 — An early challenge from Mike Shanahan gives the Redskins a first down. Washington challenged where Paulsen went out of bounds.

12:54 — After forcing Washington to punt on the opening drive, Eli Manning hooks up with Bear Pascoe for a first down on the first play. It was Pascoe’s first catch since Week 5 against Cleveland.

4:27 — TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS. Robert Griffin III rushed for 12 yards, fumbles, but is recovered by Josh Morgan, who takes it in for the score. XP is GOOD. WASHINGTON 7, NEW YORK 3

Missing three of the first five weeks of the season with a hamstring injury, linebacker Keith Rivers returned to the field last week in San Francisco. He worked his way back in, recorded a tackle, and his team came out with a big win. But now he’s ready for more this week against Washington.

It comes at a good time with Jacquian Williams not participating in practice this week with a knee injury.

“I think I’ll see a little bit of an increased role coming off the hamstring,” said Rivers, who has nine tackles in three games, including seven in the season opener. “Hopefully those are behind me and continue to move forward. And hopefully I can just compete and contribute however the coaches see fit.”

And as accurate as quarterback Robert Griffin III is (he leads the NFL with a 70.2 completion percentage), the Giants could also use Rivers’ speed against the No. 2 rushing offense, led by running back Alfred Morris.

“They suck you up with the run,” Rivers said. “When you’re thinking ‘run, run, run,’ they bomb you deep or they’re hitting low routes over the middle.
0:00 — COWBOYS 7, GIANTS 3 (key stat: both teams have a combined 53 yards rushing)

1:01 — Wilson returns his second kickoff for 32 yards.

1:07 — TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS. Romo to Ogletree for a 10-yard score. XP is good. COWBOYS 7, GIANTS 3 (drive: 7 plays, 73 yards in 2:33)

3:42 — P Steve Weatherford helping the battle of field position with a 54-yard punt down the sideline with no return.

6:06 — CB Michael Coe, playing in place of Prince Amukamara, makes a nice ankle tackle of WR Kevin Ogletree, forcing a Cowboys punt. Giants so far holding Dallas to 1-5 on third- down conversions.

8:33 — Rivers all over the place, racks up his sixth tackle.

9:14 — FIELD GOAL GIANTS. If you bet Lawrence Tynes would score the first points of the 2012 NFL season, you would be a winner. Tynes makes 22-yard FG. GIANTS 3, COWBOYS 0 (drive: 4 plays, -3 yards in 1:21).

10:46 — Michael Boley intercepts Romo, returning it 51 yards.

12:41 — LB Keith Rivers making the most out of his starting role, dragging DeMarco Murray down for a loss of 1 yard.

14:30 — Cruz gains back 11 yards after Manning was sacked for a loss of 15. Cruz has four catches for 46 yards in the early going.

15:00 — Giants will begin the second quarter with the ball on the Dallas 41.

0:00 — GIANTS 0, COWBOYS 0 (key stat: Manning begins the season 7/9 for 72 yards)

2:53 — With the ball on the Giants’ 37, Cowboys go for it on 4th-and-1. Giants stuff RB Lawrence Vickers for no gain and take over on downs. Giants are building the bridge when it comes to fourth down defense after the Falcons failed on three attempts in their playoff game nearly eight months ago to the day.

3:22 — Keith Rivers flushes Romo out of the pocket, rushing the pass. Corey Webster almost grabs an interception, but pass falls incomplete, setting up third down.

10:20 — TE Martellus Bennett gets his first catch against his former team — a 9-yard gain after Victor Cruz’s 26-yard reception from Eli Manning.

11:31 — The first carry of Wilson’s career is a 3-yard gain to the right side.

12:21 — And there you have it: the return game is revealed for the time being. Domenik Hixon back to return first punt.

13:07 — At the depleted position of defensive tackle, Rocky Bernard sacks Tony Romo for a loss of 8 yards. Bernard’s only sack last season came in the Wild Card Weekend against the Falcons.

13:58 — Giants go three-and-out on first offensive series of 2012.

15:00 – GAME DAY CAPTAINS: Chris Snee and Osi Umenyiora along with team captains Eli Manning, Justin Tuck, and Zak DeOssie. Giants win toss, elect to receive. Cowboys will defend west goal. *David Wilson back to return for first kickoff.

This week’s game will be the 100th regular season meeting between the two teams, with the Cowboys leading the series, 56-41-2. In the last meeting, the Giants defeated the Cowboys, 31-14, on Jan. 1 in Week 17 of the 2011 regular season to win the NFC East title and return to the postseason for the first time since 2008.

6:13 — Steve Weatherford boots a 59-year punt that rolls out of bounds, pinning the Patriots back at their own 10. It was his longest of the preseason. Good play especially on a #WeatherfordWednesday.

9:30 — Returning from a foot injury, Hakeem Nicks grabs his first reception of the preseason on the first ball thrown to him, a six-yard pickup over the middle.

10:53 — Antrel Rolle makes a nice open field tackle, wrapping up FB Eric Kattani until reinforcements arrived.

13:48 — Jacquian Williams, making his first appearance of the preseason, nearly intercepts a pass on the left sideline, which would have been a sure pick-six. Nonetheless, the ball falls incomplete, and the Giants force Patriots to punt. *Jerrel Jernigan getting his turn tonight fielding punts.

15:00 — Game Day Captains: WR Domenik Hixon, TE Bear Pascoe, LB Keith Rivers. Patriots win the toss and elect to receive. Giants will defend the west goal.

Giants.com takes you around the locker room as the defending Super Bowl champs approach the season opener against Dallas on Sept. 5. But first, the third preseason game vs. Chicago.

LB Mathias Kiwanuka spoke about Keith Rivers’ ability to step into a new defense this year:

“This is not an easy system to pick up but he came in… He dedicated himself. Now what we do out there in preseason, it’s usually very vanilla. Him going through practices and picking up stuff and being moved from one side to the other and being able to just go out there and just his general attitude… add that to his athletic ability; he’s a pretty good linebacker.”

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='4398aa01-f37a-4949-bc36-8523ee2154bc' data-width='384' data-alignment='center' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='center' />

Coming off a victory over the Jets, CB Prince Amukamara preps for his next game:

“I thought my physical play was great. I thought it was pretty aggressive. I didn’t see a lot of action, but I’ll probably see a lot of action this week. There are a couple of things that I can improve on that my coach pointed out to me. I’ve been focusing on that at practice.”

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='79e54c77-2928-4755-b372-34d868463eda' data-width='384' data-alignment='center' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='center' />

In two weeks, CB Corey Webster will begin his eighth season in the NFL. And who better to kick it off against than the Cowboys?

“It’s nothing you have to get up for. It’s a big rivalry game, Dallas against the Giants. We want to kick the season off the right way, so I think everyone will be up for that challenge. I think the New York Giants will be up for it, I know the Dallas Cowboys will be up for it, and I think it’ll be a good game.”

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='296f167a-45a0-4479-9d12-4faf37560ea8' data-width='384' data-alignment='center' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='center' />

As he battles a toe injury, CB Jayron Hosley, who had a 77-yard interception return for a touchdown last week, assessed where he is within the system:

“Definitely some improvement from last week to the Jets game. Just knowing where I’m supposed to be. I’m lining up my assignments and techniques got better overall. With making that kind of play, I think that kind of made things a little better. I think it was a pretty good… Not too many plays but I made it count when I got the chance.”

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='65bda969-c285-4e74-8d05-b6793266ce38' data-width='384' data-alignment='center' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='center' />

OK, so maybe Domenik Hixon’s 4-yard catch on Saturday night wasn’t as spectacular as his acrobatic touchdown almost a year ago. But for it being the first one since tearing his ACL, it’s just as sweet to him.

“It felt great,” said Hixon, who caught his only pass early in the second quarter. “I just feel blessed and I’m having a lot of fun. You’re also playing against a team that you see in your area, a quality team. The energy was up tonight.”

Hixon suffered his second consecutive season-ending knee injury last September on a 22-yard touchdown reception for the highlight reels against the Rams. He missed the preseason opener last week with a tight hamstring, making the Jets game his first one back.

Also encouraged by his continued fresh start was linebacker Keith Rivers, who has started both preseason games in place of injured Michael Boley. Rivers, who missed all of 2011 due to injury, brought it against the Jets, tying Mathias Kiwanuka with a game-high five total tackles.

He was especially impressive against the run, once chasing down Jets running back Shonn Greene behind the line of scrimmage for a loss in the second quarter. He was also part of the Jets’ failed fourth down conversion when he and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard stonewalled running back John Conner for no gain.

“We just went back to the drawing board after week one and just executed the plays the way we know how to play them,” Rivers said. “The second game, guys got a better feel for the game and guys were just working hard. Guys on the back end held the coverage and guys up front, we gave them enough to get to them.”

Thank God and S/O to all the the giant fans! Thanks for your support… Had a blast tonight! #Blessed—
Domenik Hixon (@domenik_hixon) August 19, 2012
