Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins with Hosley notching his second straight start (sixth of the year) against Baltimore, where he recorded a career best six total tackles in the 33-14 loss.

As a team, I think we definitely weren’t at our best in Baltimore. We could have played much better – offense, defense, all over. Personally, this year, I’ve learned the game is about knowing. Half the game, or most of the game, is knowing. The focus level has to be up to par. You definitely have to be focused on your keys, know what you’re doing out there at all times, and know what to expect. That just comes from preparation.

These past couple games have been learning experiences – whether from tackling or covering or whatever. I’m just learning from seeing different aspects of the game and different situations. Watching film, you learn a lot about yourself as well as the other team.

There’s still a shot to play into January, and the vets have been keeping us motivated on that fact. They’ve been doing that this week as well as the same throughout the season. And in our team meetings, coach preaches “finish, focus, and keep fighting.” That’s what we’re going to keep doing – keep fighting. We know that we have this chance, and that’s how we’ve been doing it the whole season. It’s another game, but it’s another important game. We have to come out there at our best.

Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins with Hosley receiving his fifth start of the season (in place of the injured Prince Amukamara) against Atlanta, where he learned a valuable lesson in the 34-0 loss. Hosley finished the game with four tackles and one pass defended.

Obviously I didn’t do enough. There were some things I did that were good, but I saw some things in film this week that can get better and I can work on obviously from that game. Right now all I’m doing is trying to right the wrongs and basically evaluate myself.

I’m just trying to get better for this week against the Baltimore Ravens. This is another big game for us. We definitely need to win to get to where we want to be. So I have to do my part as well and hold it down. We’ve put ourselves in this position, and now it’s time to get ourselves out.

There’s not much to say after a big loss like the one down in Atlanta, other than this game takes a great deal of focus. You’ve got to be prepared for anything and everything — for whatever. On a couple plays, I realized it’s not so much about physical ability.

It’s all about your eyes. It’s about where you place your eyes. It’s about what your reads are and what you’re looking at. That plays a key part. And then how you react or how you make a play, you move around, but it’s all about your eyes. You’ve got to see things to react. It’s all tied into your reaction. That’s what I learned this week – having better eyes while I’m on the field. That can help me in the long run.

Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins with the Giants’ win over New Orleans in MetLife Stadium, where his fellow Hokie and former college roommate David Wilson had a breakout performance.

In some ways we came out fast against the Saints, some ways we could have picked it up, but throughout we got our heads in the game and guys focused in and got it together. We came out victorious, and that’s what our goal is at the end of the day. We came out and played hard and got this win that was much needed. So I think we played pretty well, but we’re always improving.

You may have seen David’s game — my man is a big deal right now. That guy, he’s a freak, man. You see it out there. He’s a guy who works hard, who really loves and has a lot of passion for the game. When you put him out there in a good situation, he can do good things. I think the guys on kick return did a great job of opening up holes for him and doing a great job of blocking. Then you just give him the ball and let him do his thing. I think that showed he is capable of going out there and making good plays. And on offense, that’s what he does. Overall, I think it was his breakout game and a time to really show what he’s capable of for all the doubters and naysayers.

Having him along for the rookie year has been huge, for both of us. We’ve been able to have each other’s back and we’ve been able to criticize each other. Whenever he sees me and I need to pick it up, he says ‘Get up.’ If I see him and he needs to pick up, ‘Hey, let’s go, let’s do it.’ It’s been good. We’ve known each other since college, and it’s kind of just keeping things rolling from where we started off. We were roommates, so we already had a relationship.

Heading into Atlanta, it’s another high-intensity week for us. It’s high focus, high energy, and that’s what coach preaches. We need to stick to the basics because they’re a good team and a powerful team on offense. As a defense, we have to be focused and key in and really be fundamental this week. You always hear it, but we’re just taking it day by day and trying to get all the details down to make it a very focused week so we know what we’re doing and what our opponent is doing. With Prince Amukamara a little banged up, I got a little bit more time at corner in practice. We really don’t know what the status is with Prince, but whatever situation it is, I have to step up and keep continuing to work hard in practice because you never know when your turn is coming up.

Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins with the Giants coming off their 17-16 loss to the Redskins before the defending champs host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

I thought we came out and played decently against Washington, but I mean we all can do better. I thought we held them sometimes when we needed to, but sometimes they made plays. With their quarterback and offense they have, it’s a tough scheme to kind of contain. But that was last week. We know we could say, “We would have, could have, should have done this” but our idea is we’re still in the lead in the division and we need to keep it that way. We just have to focus on this week and bring that focus level back to where we had in the previous week and just work toward getting a win Sunday.

This week the Saints bring in a veteran, experienced quarterback to our stadium who knows the system well and has been in the system a while now. He has good receivers – a lot of them — that you respect and can make plays. They’re good in the red zone, and we’re just going to have to play disciplined ball and just go out there and play our game for the most part.

It’s going to take all 11 of us on defense to slow down all their weapons. They have a lot of different things that they put in for their particular offense and what they like to do. Also, their run game, they have three good backs back there that can do a lot with the ball. We’re preparing ourselves and coach is putting us in the right position so that we can make plays, contain the run game and also the pass game. It works well both ways. Coaches put us in good position, and as a player, you just have to go out there and make plays and do what we do.

This is now the latest in the year I’ve played football aside from bowl games. The college season would have wrapped up by now. As a rookie, it’s a bit of a difference. It’s something you’re not used to, but honestly, I don’t even think about it anymore. College football is over for me. I don’t even get caught up in that or try to think about it or let my mind get caught up in any of that. I’m still trying to keep pushing. We have four games left in the season. You have to take it a week at a time, literally, because it can start weighing on you. All it takes is one moment and you’ll be like, “Wow.” It’s tough, but you just have to focus in and take care of your body and get the rest when you can. That’s what I try to do so I’m ready every Sunday.

Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins coming off the Giants’ dominant win over the Packers (where Hosley had three tackles and broke up a pass) before taking on the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football.

It was a good win last week against Green Bay. They were a hot team, but we knew what we had to do. We had to go out there with a competitive team like the Packers and play ball. This week we’re just trying to pick up where we left off and keep that same energy going — and even turn it up more.

This was a “focus” week. You have to go out there and focus in on your keys and work hard. It’s one of those grind-it-out weeks to come back on a Monday night with a win. It’s not a typical schedule, but we need to still play at that level like any other game.

We’ve had some primetime games this year, but not Monday Night Football. It’s definitely a different feeling. Playing on a Monday night, everyone is watching you. It’s a big game. It’s a division rival. It’s a nationally televised game. So there is always going to be a lot riding on a primetime game, but it’s more important as far as our season. We take it seriously, and we’re up for the challenge.

Washington is another hot team stringing together some wins. You’ve seen the first game we played Robert Griffin III. We know what he can do. This game is all about getting back to the basics and seeing what we need to change from last game against those guys and what to work on. We’re seeing what they’ve done these past couple games in order to kind of counter that and just contain him as much as we can and go out there and play our ball. That’s basically it. It’s not so much what they’re doing, but it’s what we’re doing and what we can do.

Cornerback Jayron Hosley was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round this past April. Throughout the season, the Virginia Tech product and Florida native provides an inside look into his journey of making it in the NFL. This week’s post begins with the rookie returning home for the bye week before the Giants take on Green Bay this Sunday night.

For the bye, I went back to Florida and I reunited with the family and visited people I haven’t seen in awhile. It really was just a time for relaxing and I was just chilling in my old room. I like to go fishing on the downtime to help me relax. I took my family and we had a couple get-togethers – things like that just to cool out and kind of bring it down to earth a little bit. I got that valuable rest that you need on that bye week.

It’s always good to see your old friends and family. It keeps you grounded. It keeps you grounded for the real family who’s been there and knows how it is and understands just to give you time to relax, cool your head, don’t try to smother you but still be around to give you that love that you need. It’s very relaxing and it’s a great feeling.

When I got back up north, I caught a little bit of the NFL games. I saw a little of the Ravens and the Steelers game yesterday, but to be honest, I was trying to get away from football. That’s the only game I caught – a little bit of the third quarter and some of the fourth.

The time away was much needed, but now it’s Monday and that’s over with. It’s a six-game season now. Everybody, you could tell, is snapping back into business mode and is kind of picking it up and trying to make our improvements. Practice outside today got us going and everybody is focused and ready to get this game plan for Green Bay and go at it.

Everybody knows the Packers have a talented offense. They have a great quarterback out there to get those guys going. He has a lot of options to choose from, and that’s pretty much what I see – a lot of talent on that offense. The defense is good as well. So it’s definitely going to be a tough game.

It wasn’t our best performance or my best performance. We really started off strong early on. I was hyped and ready for my first time playing the Steelers. I have much respect for those guys.

Toward the end of the game, I feel like I could have been a little more aware, just like with the penalty. Throughout the game, I felt like it was a decent game, but we lost. That overwhelms everything as far as how I view the game and myself. It doesn’t matter. It’s all about the win. I just want to do my part and help my team. Like that last third down catch, I put that on me. Like I say, you’ve got to man up. I have to come through for my team on a third down like that. That was a key part of the game. We’ve got to make it happen. We’ve got to make plays. If coach puts that trust in you to put you out there, you’ve got to hold it down.

We’re playing November ball now, and the coaches are definitely expecting a lot out of me. They expect me to grow up each week and progress because each week there is something new that you can learn and pick up and carry on to the next weekend. You have to step your game up. Every week is about stepping your game up, being more aware, and playing to the level of your teammates. I’m a first-year guy so I’m still learning. I’m trying to stay green. You never want to feel complacent. I’m just trying to stay green and keep working.

Now it’s on to the next one. This is the first time in a while that we’re heading into the week coming off a loss. We’ve got to get it turned up. We’ve got to come in this week focused and everybody hitting on all cylinders, everybody on their keys, and just bring that energy level up that coach preaches. It’s got to be a high energy week. We’ve got to be focused and just know our assignments and prepare ourselves each day.

We’re still in a race right now. We’ve got to approach it like that. Each week you can put yourself in the hole or you can progress. We’re shooting for the playoffs, but we’ve got to take it one game at a time. Each week is as important as the last.
