THURSDAY MORNING HEADLINES

QUOTABLES

“I remember Ernie Accorsi making that deal, of being 100 percent in belief that this was the right thing to do for our franchise. I remember that Ernie had studied Eli since he was a freshman in college and had really a strong, strong feeling about him. I remember the fact that he had the confidence and the constitution, if you will, to push the deal through. It wasn’t an easy deal to make. I can remember him informing Mr. Mara what he was trying to do at the time and I’m sure Bob Tisch at the time as well. But it was a move that he made with great conviction. Philip Rivers has had an outstanding career in San Diego and Eli Manning has had an outstanding career here, so I think you have a win-win situation there.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“Obviously it was a tough loss.  I think just because there were a lot of good things that we did.  We ran the ball really well, responded well kind of when we needed a touchdown at the end, we had a good drive and got a touchdown and the two-point conversion.  Obviously you kind of feel the worst.  There were some opportunities and some bad plays that kept us from being better than we were.” -QB Eli Manning

What they’re saying: Giants vs. Cowboys

Posted by Joe Kania on November 25, 2013 – 3:00 pm

What did the Giants have to say after losing to Dallas on Sunday?

Tom Coughlin

“Good, hard fought divisional game.  It came down to the last couple of seconds. I thought we played hard.  We didn’t make as many plays as we’d hoped.  We drove back in the second half.  We got the ball in the end zone, got the two-point play.  We let them out of the hole a couple of times, rose up and got the ball for the offense a couple of times, which was the only way we were going to have any kind of field position.  Very disappointed.  Players played hard.  They wanted to win very badly.  We were down in the green zone a couple of times in the first half and came away with field goals.  You always hold that in the back of your mind, is that going to come back and haunt you?  Obviously it did.  We rushed the ball very well tonight.  We didn’t particularly throw the ball or have as much yardage as we would have thought with the passing game.  Our defense, I think, had one third down up until that last drive.  We had them in outstanding position there a couple of times, 3rd and 10.  Even the last one 3rd and 10, that’s not gimme field goal, not on a night like this where the ball is hard.  Both teams played hard.  We felt like we obviously had a chance and should have won, but we didn’t.  Credit where credit is due and back to work.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“It’s always tough, you know, when you are on the sideline and you can’t do anything about what’s going on. It’s always painful. I thought our overall game was pretty good. We had some penalties that really hurt us during the game. We had some plays that I wish we could have had back. We just got to keep fighting and try to battle back. We got five games left, play one game at a time and just hope for some other things to happen.” -RB Brandon Jacobs

“It’s disappointing. Early in the game we had some opportunities to get some touchdowns and get the lead or keep the game close, and we obviously didn’t execute well enough down there. We had a couple plays where we went backwards, which is always tough, and it makes it more difficult to score. We had third and goal from the 10, so we’ve got to do better down there to get touchdowns and not settle for field goals.” -QB Eli Manning

“Yeah it hurts. There’s no doubt about it that it hurts. We can’t hang our head on this loss. We’ve still got five more games to play, we’ve just got to rally up, just keep doing what we’ve been doing the past five weeks. I think our preparation was good, I think our execution was pretty good. Both teams were fighting, someone had to come up short and unfortunately it was us.” -S Antrel Rolle

“I think we played our heart out but we didn’t play to our full capability. We made a lot of mistakes out there. When you make mistakes like that, you’re not going to win. We made a lot of mistakes and we just have to move on to the next game.” -Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul

QUOTABLES

“I was proud with the way we responded late in the game. We needed to get some touchdowns, and we did. Brandon Myers on a big fourth down conversion and he scores, then obviously late in the game, we know we’ve got to score and hit Victor Cruz on a big third down down the middle. We get the touchdown and get the two-point conversion. I’m proud of the way we responded and offensively came through and came up big when we needed to. We just didn’t quite get enough.” -QB Eli Manning

Giants Week 12 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on November 22, 2013 – 1:00 pm

ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX break down this week’s fantasy football rankings.

Rueben Randle

For the first time this season, Rueben Randle earned a higher fantasy ranking than fellow wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks.

The gap had been closing in the past weeks; Nicks was No. 30 in Week 11 and Randle was No. 36. Although both earned an average ranking of No. 26 in Week 12, Randle edged Nicks out, 104 to 105, between ESPN, Yahoo!, CBS and FOX’s fantasy football rankings.

Randle was also selected by Yahoo’s Brandon Funston as his Player of the Week for Week 12.

“Definitely put Rueben Randle in your lineup this week,” Funston said. “The guy has had six touchdowns in his last six games and when you look back to what he did against the Cowboys in Week 1, he had five catches and 101 yards. That was his most on the season. The Cowboys give up the most passing yards per game in the league so Rueben Randle, too hot to handle for the Cowboys defense, he is my starter at the wide receiver position this week.”

Funston and Yahoo! awarded Randle his highest ranking of all four sources at No. 20.

WEEK 11 FANTASY RESULTS

But the team’s highest-ranked receiver is still Victor Cruz.

Cruz, No. 9,  found his way back into the top 10 for the first time since Week 8 and was ranked as high as No. 7 by FOX. In the Giants’ Week 1 matchup against Dallas, Cruz scored a season-high 29.8 points and finished as the league’s No. 3 receiver.

Quarterback Eli Manning moved up seven spots, from No. 19 to No. 17, and was ranked No. 8 by FOX while running back Andre Brown landed an average ranking of No. 10 for the second week in a row.

Here’s a look at this week’s fantasy rankings. This week’s ranking is listed in parentheses. +/- indicates the difference between this week’s rankings and last week’s:

GIANTS WEEK 11 FANTASY RESULTS

Antrel RolleIn its first six games, the Giants’ defense scored a combined six points and the team began the season with an 0-6 record. In each of those six weeks the unit failed to finish among the top 20 in the league in fantasy points scored.

But In Week 7, following a scoreless outing in a Week 6 loss to Chicago, the unit put up 11 and won its first game.

Two weeks later it scored a season-high 17 points and in Week 11 the unit scored 16, finished as the league’s No. 4 defense and won its fourth consecutive contest.

WEEK 11 FANTASY RANKINGS

“We’ve put the blinders on,” defensive end Justin Tuck said after the Giants’ Week 11 victory over Green Bay. “We’re not listening to the good, the bad or the ugly. We’re studying our butts off, we’re doing more meeting time, all the things that we were maybe lacking before. But for me personally, it’s fun. When you’re out there having fun it shows and right now we’re out there having fun. Again, the defense played pretty well and we’re just trying to continue that.”

The team also picked up its first defensive touchdown on the season when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul brought an interception back 24 yards for a touchdown.

HIGHLIGHTS: GIANTS VS. PACKERS

The Giants’ defense earned an average ranking of No. 12 in Week 11 but was ranked as high as No. 5 by ESPN.

Running back Andre Brown finished as the league’s No. 5 running back in fantasy points scored in his season debut and remains in the top 20 after picking up 9.3 points against Green Bay.

QUOTABLES

“Everybody definitely realizes how important this game is.  With every division game, it’s very important because we’re fighting to make the playoffs.  Everyone was in there, we all watched film as a unit.  Offense watched it with the offense and defense watched it with their players and special teams came and watched.  Even though we had the day off, everyone still sees how important this game is to us and we have to go out there and make sure we’re flying around, executing all our assignments and playing smart and fast football.” -RB Andre Brown

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: GIANTS VS. PACKERS

“Good to win. I thought we did some things well tonight. There’s obviously more to be done. Special teams had a better night, no doubt. Rueben had the nice punt return, which helped right off the bat. Felt we should have scored when we were down there in the first half and came away with no points, felt we should have scored there. In the second half, the battle went back and forth. We got a little bit of rushing yardage, not a lot. We did a great job against them as well, which we have done all year against the run, against a very good back, and a very good offensive line as well. We were plus-two in turnovers. I was pleased with that. I think we had three penalties, I was pleased with that as well. So, we are very, very happy to win at home against a very good team.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“Going into this game we have a young quarterback, established offensive line, big time running back who’s a load, a hard tackle you have to swarm. We were able to stop the run and sure enough, kid comes out and makes huge plays in the passing game. We wanted to put the pressure on him, but he was able to make plays, but we stayed the course and we got some turnovers late and that was able to affect the outcome of the game.” -LB Jon Beason

“I think it was a good job by everybody on the offense, just knowing their assignments.  I think we ran the ball well and they did a good job to stop the run so we did a good job of throwing short passes.  Getting Brandon Myers into it, getting our backs into it on some screens, getting them out of the backfield. Linebackers are dropping deep trying to take away the receivers.  I think that’s what you have to do for an offense to be successful.  Everybody has to know their assignments and be in the right places.   If you want to take away throws down the field, then you’re going to have to throw underneath a few times to open things up down the field for big plays later on.” -QB Eli Manning

“I knew that it was a touchdown.  As soon as I caught it, I knew it was a touchdown.  I’m not a receiver or anything, but I knew it was a touchdown. ” -DE Jason Pierre-Paul

GIANTS WEEK 11 FANTASY RANKINGS

Andre BrownAndre Brown made a believer of the fantasy experts in his season debut against the Raiders on Sunday.

Brown picked up 115 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 30 carries and jumped 20 spots in the fantasy rankings, from No. 30 to No. 10. He scored 17.9 fantasy points, the most of any Giants running back this season, and finished as the league’s No. 5 running back.

“He’s going to be a top 20 running back for me because I don’t see another running back in that backfield getting that many carries,” ESPN’s Eric Karabell said.  “He’s 39 rushing yards away from the team lead and he’s played in one game. Think about that for a minute. Going forward they’ve got Green Bay coming up, I’m going to rank him ahead of Ray Rice and ahead of Trent Richardson. These guys are doing nothing, Andre Brown is a good player. If I knew he was going to get that many touches I would have ranked him higher. Yes — he is a top 20 running back this week and for the rest of the season.”

WEEK 10 FANTASY RESULTS

Brown is the only Giant ranked in the top 10 but the team’s defense is not far behind. The unit earned an average ranking of No. 12, one spot down from last week, but was ranked as high as No. 5 by Karabell and ESPN.

Jason Pierre-Paul“I’d say the Giants are a good streaming defense,” Karaball said. “But they’ve also gotten a lot of luck with the quarterbacks they’ve played. Scott Tolzien will be starting his first NFL game on Sunday and I have to believe he will be good for at least two interceptions and maybe a fumble or two.”

The team’s defense finished No. 3 in the league with 15 points scored in Week 10.

But several Giants are moving in the opposite direction. Quarterback Eli Manning fell five sports, from No. 14 to No. 19, and was ranked as low as No. 23 by ESPN. Wide receiver Victor Cruz also fell, from No. 12 to No. 15. Cruz had been ranked as high as No. 6 in Weeks 5 and 6 but remains out of the top 10 for the second week in a row.

CBS Sports’ three-man panel apparently had mixed emotions about Josh Brown. He was ranked as the league’s No. 2 kicker by one member but received a No. 23 ranking by another. Brown earned an average ranking of No. 18.

Here’s a look at this week’s fantasy rankings. This week’s ranking is listed in parentheses. +/- indicates the difference between this week’s rankings and last week’s.
