Accustomed to having fans chant their names, three Giants had their roles reversed on Wednesday night in the Bronx.

David Wilson, Rueben Randle, and Bear Pascoe took in the Yankees game against the Seattle Mariners with the Bleacher Creatures, assisting “Bald” Vinny Milano and the fan group in the “Roll Call” tradition.

PHOTOS: GIANTS ON THE MOUND

“I’ve never witnessed anything like that. One guy screaming and the whole crowd is involved,” Wilson, a Virginia native, told MLB.com. “This was my first time being a part of something like that.”

Before the game, which the Yankees lost 12-2, the Giants trio toured the stadium and watched from the field during pregame warm-ups.

“It was really fun. That was the first time I got to be there at that level and just to see guys getting ready and preparing for the game and getting ready to go out,” Pascoe said.

“It was pretty neat. It was pretty similar to us before a game – we go out and each guy does his own thing and does what he has to do to prepare for the game.”

That included batting practice, where Wilson believed he could hit one out of the park if given some time.

“Give me a little while, a little practice,” he said. “[Give me] about a week.”

Randle, a fellow second-year draft pick, disagreed.

A changing of the guard was set in motion last month when the Giants released running back Ahmad Bradshaw. The six-year vet’s departure jumpstarted the competition for the lead role, and David Wilson, last year’s first-round draft choice by the Giants, has set his eyes on it.

<nflcs:avplayer data-contentid='cb464f31-4760-4cbd-99b0-3ab1923be264' data-width='384' data-alignment='right' data-autoplay='false' data-pr='' data-adtagsuffix=';player=embedded' data-playername='wordpress-embed' class='right' />

“I mean that’s definitely my intention,” Wilson said Thursday on ESPN NY 98.7FM. “But you’ve got to go in and come into camp and definitely lock the spot down. So I’ve been working hard this offseason so I can give myself the best chance to do that.”

Among others, Andre Brown shares that intention and will also vie for more time out of the backfield. But Wilson believes turning the corner after the bye in Week 11 of his rookie season will give him an edge heading into 2013.

“After that bye week, I took that time to really stay in the meeting rooms extra and definitely catch up,” said Wilson, who had just 18 carries before the break and three games with none. “So after that bye week, I think that’s when I really had a good grasp of what was going on, and I was able to go out there and perform and have some good games and some good moments.”

Wilson went on to finish the year with 71 carries for 358 yards (5.0 average) and four touchdowns, and averaged more than 10 rushes for 60 yards per game in the final four weeks of the season. The increased load was partly due to his role in the blocking schemes, which had been a question mark early on.

“It was pretty fair,” Wilson said of people critiquing him. “When the game’s on the line, the ball is going to be in Eli [Manning’s] hands for him to make the decisions. So in order for him to make decisions accurately, he’s got to be able to stand in the pocket. But as well, it was a part of just bringing me along slow. The coaches weren’t really in a rush. Ahmad was definitely doing his part in making plays for the team, and I guess they didn’t feel like they were going to rush to really get me on the field.”

Of course, the final question remains his role as a kick returner.

Wilson became the first player in NFL history to record 200 kick return yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game with his performance against New Orleans in Week 14. But if he plans on being an every-down back, can he still return kicks?

“That’s definitely one of my passions,” he said. “So I would definitely enjoy being back there and helping in that aspect too.”

At this time last year, David Wilson was preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine and the ensuing draft. He would eventually be selected by the Giants with the final pick of the first round, and while there was a learning curve as a rookie, nothing really surprised Wilson. It was just a matter of piecing it together with Eli Manning at the helm.

As he sheds his “rookie” label entering his second season, Giants.com recently caught up with Wilson at the Timex Performance Center.

“In college, it’s a little bit more simple,” Wilson said. “The playbook is a lot more simple than the NFL playbook, and there are a lot more audibles, especially when you’ve got a quarterback who knows everything that’s going on. Eli, if he sees something wrong, he’s going to change it. So you’ve got to know what he’s talking about.”

Before Ahmad Bradshaw was released by the Giants, it was expected that Wilson would receive more touches in 2013. But now that Bradshaw has been released, Wilson is ready for however many carries are put on his plate.

“I can do one, I could do 30,” said Wilson, who was named second-team All-Pro as a kick returner. “Whatever my job is and whatever the team needs me to do, the whole objective is to get back to the Super Bowl.”
