Special Scott making plays in preseason

Posted by Dan Salomone on August 25, 2012 – 2:45 pm

Da’Rel Scott now has a blocked punt to go along with a fake punt run for a touchdown on his Giants preseason resume.

The second-year running back made the play of the game on special teams against the Bears on Friday night, blocking Ryan Quigley’s punt late in the first half.

Linebacker Greg Jones recovered the ball at Chicago’s 10-yard line, and two plays later, Andre Brown ran in for a one-yard touchdown for the Giants.

“It was just something we were working on during the week,” Scott said. “I tried to use my skill set to set them up, do some speed rushes. I tried to set them up again, went outside, and then it opened up. It worked out.

“It takes a lot of practice. You’ve got to understand where the punter releases the ball and kicks it because there are a lot of different ways you can try to get there. But you’ve got to try to keep your eyes on the ball to stay on the blocked punt, that’s the main thing.”

In the fourth and final preseason game last year, Scott, then a rookie, received the direct snap on a fake punt play and broke it for a 65-yard score against the Patriots. It came two weeks after he had a “traditional” 97-yard rushing touchdown, coincidentally against the Bears as well.

Once again, Scott hopes to turn his preseason success into regular-season production, which he was unable to do last season, particularly in the run game. He tried to add to his cause on Friday with a 15-yard run, but netted just one yard on four other carries. He also had a catch-and-run for 12 yards midway through the third quarter, but Scott knows special teams play is the tiebreaker when it comes to roster decisions.

“In my situation right now, I’ve got to get noticed somewhere,” he said. “If it takes special teams to stay on this team, I’ve got to make that my main thing and just try to make plays out there.”

Giants vs. Bears Live Blog: 3rd QTR

Posted by Dan Salomone on August 24, 2012 – 9:47 pm

0:00 — Giants 17, Bears 13 (key stat: LB Keith Rivers leading the team with 5 tackles)

*Paid attendance announced: 76,077

6:01 — Making a mark on special teams already, Scott sees sustained action out of the backfield on offense. He capitalizes on his first rush, turning it into a 15-yard pickup. On the next play, he loses four yards on another rush, but makes them back with some shifty moves for a 12-yard catch-and-run.

6:12 — FIELD GOAL. Bears make 48-yard field goal. GIANTS 17, BEARS 3 (drive: 9 plays, 39 yards in 3:14)

*David Carr now in for Manning, who finishes 17/21, 148 yards, 1 TD.

15:00 — Giants will receive the kickoff to begin the second half.

Giants vs. Bears Live Blog: 2nd QTR

Posted by Dan Salomone on August 24, 2012 – 8:51 pm

0:00 — Giants 17, Bears 7 (key stat: Big Blue has 13 first downs to Chicago’s 5)

1:04 — Specials coming through for the Giants tonight. LB Mark Herzlich forces a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Bears recover at their own 2. Not exactly last year’s NFC Championship, but an encouraging game for Tom Quinn and his squad nonetheless.

1:22– TOUCHDOWN. RB Andre Brown scores on a 1-yard rush around the left end. It’s his first touchdown since the 2010 preseason. XP is good. Giants 17, Bears 7 (drive: 1 play, 10 yards, 0:10)

1:34 — Da’Rel Scott blocks a Bears punt, LB Greg Jones recovers.

3:22 — The Giants coaching staff is taking a detailed look at Douglas as a punt returner, giving him a handful of opportunities so far. On his fourth of the night, Douglas broke one for 37 yards but was called back with two holding penalties called on the Giants.

*Manning went 7/7 on the scoring drive. He is now 15/18 for 121 yards and a touchdown.

5:41 — TOUCHDOWN. WR Ramses Barden catches his first ever NFL touchdown (preseason or otherwise). He gets in on an 11-yard slant from Manning. XP is good. Giants 10, Bears 7 (drive: 10 plays, 58 yards, 6:14.

11:47 — Victor Cruz gets on the board with two short catches. Eli so far is 10/13 for 72 yards.

15:00 — Giants begin the second quarter with the ball on their own 40.
