The late ‘80s and early ‘90s were good times to be a Giants fan. Carl Banks, who was a great contributor to that success, wants to return to the period.

The former two-time Super Bowl champion linebacker and current president/founder of the apparel group G-III Sports is helping re-launch a line of Satin starter jackets for major sports teams.

“There is a Starter jacket in everyone’s closet or there is a Starter memory in everyone’s closet,” Banks recently said at the unveiling before Super Bowl XLVII. “If you were born anywhere from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, you have a Starter memory. So it’s an iconic piece. There has never been a piece more iconic in outerwear than the Starter satin jacket and the breakaway jacket. So we think it’s going to be a really awesome run.

“The whole Starter evolution for me is kind of a 360 process because when I was a rookie with the Giants, Starter was the hot brand, and they signed me as one of their first athlete endorsers. So I got a chance to be a part of the whole sports culture, and they’re the blueprint for everything that you see in sports marketing now, especially around apparel. When I had an opportunity to really take this brand, I had to jump at it because there is nothing more traditional about sports apparel than the Starter brand.”

The limited edition NFL jackets will be the first to come out in late August while the NBA will follow in November, according to ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell. Originally inspired by the wardrobe of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in the 1988 movie “Coming to America,” Banks first contacted the NFL’s head of licensing, Leo Kane, who told him to go to Iconix, the company which owns the Starter brand.

“Anything from the ’80s today is seen as cool,” Iconix president Seth Horowitz told ESPN.com. “For those that remember the times, they strongly associate with it, and for those that are too young, they’re already into the snap-back hat craze.”
