What they’re saying: Giants vs. Redskins

Posted by Joe Kania on December 30, 2013 – 2:00 pm

Giants react after a victory over Washington.

Tom Coughlin

“I’m proud of our team, not only how they rallied today, but to win the last two ball games. I thought the way we played today – we had a lot of injuries; a lot of things happened out there – obviously not a great day, and the weather too. But everybody hung in there on both sides and battled well. There were a lot of turnovers in the game, naturally, because of the weather, but I liked the way we finished. We did put the ball on the ground there toward the end and we made substantial yardage. We were playing down to our last offensive lineman – we didn’t have any left. We had a couple of injuries there, so I was happy with the way we finished. Our defense played very, very well, and did not allow them really any points in the second half. The outcome of the game was good. We handled some of the more difficult areas well. We did blow a couple of snaps back, but the punter handled that and did a good job with it. I thought with our special teams, we didn’t quite cover the kicks the way we wanted to today and the ball came out a little bit, but we got the same type of returns. It certainly was, from the start to the finish…the last 10 games, we did win seven, and I was proud of the way they stayed together as a team. That was the whole idea. We had good leadership. With regard to that, our captains did a good job and they can’t do it alone. The attitude and the approach that this team took, regardless of some of the very difficult Mondays that we’ve had, was very impressive from the standpoint of maturity and professionalism, and I was proud of that.” -Coach Tom Coughlin

“You hate to leave your teammates and you like to finish, knowing it’s going to be the last game of the season – go out there and finish and get a win. We made enough plays early in the game to get us a lead at halftime and the guys played outstanding in the second half with some big plays, and the defense played outstanding. It’s good to at least finish the season with a win and obviously now we just have to put this season behind us and learn from it, try to get better from some of the things that happened, heal up this ankle, and get ready for next year.” -QB Eli Manning

“No matter how tough times may get, tough times never last, tough people always do and this is an extremely tough football team.  No matter what kind of ups and downs we may face throughout the season.” -S Antrel Rolle

“I think I played pretty decent today. Honestly, the only thing that’s in my head right now is that play where I didn’t see the ball and the running back got outside and he rushed for about 12 yards on my side of the ball. That’s the thing that bugs me. You don’t really think of the good stuff until somebody else brings it in. I think everybody knows I still play the game at a high level and when I’m healthy I feel like I’m one of the best to do it and I’ve been blessed to be healthy this year.” -DE Justin Tuck

“It was very important for me to play in the season-ending game.  It’s what you want to do.  I’ve been a guy that if I’m on the injury list, I’m sick to my stomach because that’s not the guy that I am.  I’ve been a guy who has been durable, who has fought through injuries. To be out here to play the last game was very important for me because this could be the last time I wear a Giants’ jersey and a helmet, or it could be the last time I play football in general.  This was my last year on my contract and number one, to be blessed to have the opportunity that I can walk away on my own terms if I decide to, that’s huge.  Not many guys in the NFL can do that.  I’m proud and I’m honored to be a New York Giant and be here for over a decade.  I’ve accomplished everything I could possibly dream of.  In 2003, if any of you would have written that Dave Diehl, a fifth round draft pick out of Illinois, would start 160 games, play in 164 and tie Phil Simms for number 12 on the all-time playing list for the New York Giants, to win two Super Bowls, to be an All Pro, to play in the Pro Bowl, and win two Super Bowl rings, and win every single Giants’ award possible, I think if you guys would have written that in ’03, they would have said you’re crazy.” -G Dave Diehl

Giants Week 17 fantasy rankings

Posted by Joe Kania on December 29, 2013 – 11:00 am

Where are the Giants ranked?

Giants Lions Football

Tom Coughlin, Jerrell JerniganLooking for a last-minute fantasy add before Sunday’s action begins? The Giants defense may be what your team needs to get over the hump in Week 17.

At No. 18, the unit is the Giants’ highest-ranked group or player heading into the final week of the regular season. In week 16, the team’s defense picked up 15 points and finished No. 6 among the league. It has been ranked inside the top 20 for six of the past seven weeks and finished with 15 or more points four times this season.

Also moving up in this week’s rankings is wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan. With Victor Cruz sidelined with a knee injury, Jernigan has stepped in at the slot and excelled. He scored a career-high 6.7 points in Week 15 before setting another career mark (15) the following week.

Jernigan’s 15 points in Week 16 were the eight-most of any receiver in the league.

After two down weeks in a row, quarterback Eli Manning climbed two spots, from No. 24 to No. 22. Receivers Hakeem Nicks and Rueben Randle, along with tight end Brandon Myers, also moved up from last week’s rankings.

SUNDAY MORNING HEADLINES

QUOTABLES

“Obviously, individually, I did some pretty good things.  I wanted to get in the end zone more, that was one of the things that I wanted to do this year, continue to be that eight, nine, 10 touchdown guy a year.  Unfortunately I couldn’t accomplish that.  Individually, I still felt pretty good, pretty confident about the year I had. From a whole standpoint offensively, we weren’t near where we were supposed to be, what we’re accustomed to being and it’s unfortunate.  Things happen, injuries happen, things happen from year to year from team to team that kind of adjust and shape the way your season is going to unfold, and I think that’s what kind of happened to us.  It’s unfortunate, but it’s not something we want to grow accustomed to.  We want to change that and continue to build a winning tradition here.” -WR Victor Cruz

Giants Week 16 fantasy results

Posted by Joe Kania on December 28, 2013 – 6:50 pm

How did the Giants perform in Week 16?

Bill Bentley, Jerrel Jernigan, Louis Delmas

With wide receiver Victor Cruz recovering from season-ending knee surgery, Jerrel Jernigan has had the opportunity to play the ever-important slot position for the Giants.

Jernigan picked up a career day in Week 15 against Seattle and followed that up with the eighth-most fantasy points of any receiver in the league when he picked up 14 in the team’s Week 16 victory over the Lions.

“I was at practice every day watching (Victor) Cruz and taking tips from him and learning from him,” Jernigan said. “That’s the best thing you can do and people are always saying that my time is now or I haven’t got my time, but I just take it as I’m out there practicing and learning from the best slot receiver in the game right now.”

Jernigan and Cruz are the only Giants to have a top 10 fantasy day from the wide receiver position. Cruz finished as the league’s No. 3 pass-catcher in Week 1.

“This is two games in a row he’s played really well,” coach Tom Coughlin said, “and to be honest with you, this week, he was injured and he was sick last night, so he keeps you right on the edge of your seat, whether or not he’s going to be able to go. He bounced back and he’s a tough guy.”

Kicker Josh Brown finished as the league’s No. 2 kicker, the second time this season he’s done so, with 13 points and the team’s defense finished No. 6 with 15.
