THROWBACK THURSDAY: DAVID WILSON
As a senior in 2009, Wilson rushed for 2,291 yards and 35 touchdowns, both school records, and was rated the No. 1 prospect in Virginia as per The Roanoke Times.
Rivals.com listed him as the No. 4 running back in the country and the No. 40 player overall. The top running back in that class, Bryce Brown, played college football at Tennessee and is currently a Philadelphia Eagle. The No. 2 running back in the class of ’09 was Trent Richardson of the Indianapolis Colts and Christine Michael, No. 3, impressed in his rookie debut for the Seattle Seahawks this past weekend.
ESPN felt similarly about the 5-foot-10 Wilson, listing him as the nation’s No. 5 running back and No. 50 overall player.
He was Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009 and represented the United States in the first-ever junior world championship the summer after his senior season.
After rushing for 1,551 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior in 2008, Wilson had scholarship offers from Auburn, South Carolina, Clemson and Michigan, among others, but decided to commit to Virginia Tech in July of 2008, weeks before the start of his senior year. Wilson would not visit Virginia Tech officially until January, 2009.
Below are Wilson’s high school highlights:
“I think our confidence is good. I think guys are excited and looking forward to changing things. We feel we have a great opportunity to change things around and get some momentum. We can’t change the start of the season, but we can start right now and change the ending. That’s all we’re focusing on right now.” -QB Eli Manning
