PEYTON’S ‘DUMMY’ CALLS
Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has long been known for his ability to change the play at the line of scrimmage and catch opposing defenses off guard. But, with all of the calls Peyton makes at the line, how can the Giants tell what’s a real call and what’s fake?
Safety Antrel Rolle and defensive end Justin Tuck agreed that the only way is to wait and see.
“I wouldn’t know [if the calls are real or fake],” Rolle said. “I wouldn’t know until we actually go in there and get a feel for the game but, you know, it could be dummy calls, maybe not, who’s to say. But we’re just going in, we’re going to play defense. We’re not going to worry about too many of the calls, the dummy calls, we’re just going to go in there and trust ourselves.”
“I don’t know,” Tuck said. “I’m sure he has a fair amount of dummy calls but I wouldn’t have any way of knowing if they’re dummy calls or not.”
Linebacker Mark Herzlich, who will be starting in the place of an injured Dan Connor, will get his first taste of Peyton on Sunday. Herzlich believes the key to decoding Manning’s messages lies in the Broncos’ formations and play-calling.
“He has lots of dummy calls and he has lots of real calls,” Herzlich said. “He does a real good job in not letting you pick on keys, but it’s not as much reading Peyton for these keys. It’s reading the formations and the plays and the other players out on the field.”
“It was surprising. I had no idea what was going to happen. Once Seattle released me, I wasn’t expecting to be picked up. I was expecting to sign back to Seattle’s practice squad and once I texted my agent, he called me and gave me the news. It was good news. ” -LB Allen Bradford
