ELI MANNING RANKED NO. 2 PLAYER IN NFC EAST

Eli ManningQuarterback Eli Manning is the fourth, and presumably the last, Giant to appear on ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano’s list of the top 20 players in division. Manning, No. 2, joins defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul (6) and wide receivers Victor Cruz (9) and Hakeem Nicks (15).

“Numbers aren’t the whole Manning story, of course,” Graziano wrote. “He’s a proven winner. He’s an unquestioned, experienced and venerated leader in his own locker room. He leads weekly meetings with his receiving corps — film sessions in which, the receivers say, Manning is the only one who talks and they all just listen and soak it all in.”

“He is as vital to the success of his offense as Robert Griffin III is to his, he’s just not as new or exciting. Manning hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season, and his reliable, steadying presence is the biggest reason the Giants enter every season certain they can contend for a playoff spot. They may not always make it, but when they do, Manning makes them a threat to cash in with a Super Bowl title.”

Manning is the highest-ranked quarterback listed thus far, two spots ahead of Washington’s Robert Griffin III (4) and five ahead Dallas’ Tony Romo (7). Unless Philadalphia quarterback Michael Vick steals the No. 1 spot, which is unlikely, Manning will, for the second year in a row, be the top-ranked quarterback in the NFC East.

Here’s what the list looks like so far:

2. Eli Manning, QB, Giants

3. Dez Bryant, WR, Cowboys

4. Robert Griffin III, QB, Redskins

5. LeSean McCoy, RB, Eagles

6. Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, Giants

7. Tony Romo, QB, Cowboys

8. Alfred Morris, RB, Redskins

9. Victor Cruz, WR, Giants

10. Jason Witten, TE, Cowboys

11. Jason Peters, T, Eagles

12. Sean Lee, LB, Cowboys

13. Trent Williams, T, Redskins

14. Evan Mathis, G, Eagles

15. Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants

16. DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles

17. Anthony Spencer, DE, Cowboys

18. London Fletcher, LB, Redskins

19. Brian Orakpo, LB, Redskins

20. Jason Hatcher, DL, Cowboys

QUOTABLES

“You always have to be smart when rushing Romo because, he doesn’t look like it, but he’s a heck of an athlete. He can make you miss. Heck, I’ve personally been through it where you think you have him and he’ll hit a step or a spin on you and leave you flying in the other direction. Not only does he make you miss but he knows how to get his eyes back down field and find the open receiver. We’ve got to try to help our secondary out by making sure we’re disciplined in how we rush him up front.” DT Cullen Jenkins
