JOHN MARA, TOM COUGHLIN AMONG THE FIVE MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN NJ SPORTS

John Mara, Tom CoughlinCo-owner John Mara and coach Tom Coughlin became the third and fourth Giants to be listed on Star-Ledger columnist Steve Politi’s “Juice List“. Coming in at numbers two and four, respectively, they join quarterback Eli Manning (No. 14) and general manager Jerry Reese (No. 19) as two of the top 25 most influential people in New Jersey sports.

Mara, the team’s president and CEO, moved up two spots from his No. 4 ranking a year ago and remains the only Giant to ever be ranked No. 1, earning the top spot in 2011.

“The Giants co-owner was initially skeptical about the Super Bowl in the new stadium his team shares with the Jets,” Politi wrote. “Now, the week will only be a complete success if it becomes a home game for his team – and, despite skepticism around the league, Mara is confident the talent is there to make that happen.”

» 2012, No. 4.  “For the second time in five years, the Giants’ co-owner — and the man who topped this list last year — gets to hand out a set of championship rings this fall. When will other teams in the area (hello, Jets) realize the Giants do things the right way?”

» 2011, No. 1. “The Giants CEO not only helped clear the impasse between the players and owners in the lockout, he treated his team’s fans and employees with respect during the ugly process.”

» 2010, No. 2. “Without the new patriarch of one of the NFL’s founding families, it is doubtful the league would have considered New Jersey as the site for the 2014 Super Bowl. Mara, the son of the late Giants owner, had the influence to make a cold-weather venue a reality. But …”

» 2009, No. 2. “The son of the late Giants owner Wellington Mara is proving himself to be a strong leader for the powerhouse franchise — and no team, despite the New York in its name, is more Jersey.”

coughlinLike Mara, Coughlin has been on each Juice List since its creation in 2009. Despite falling one spot from his No. 3 ranking a year ago, he remains in the top five.

“In typical fashion, the Giants coach didn’t miss a single practice session when he flew out to see Bill Parcells enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Politi wrote. “With two championships, Coughlin already might have enough on his resume to join him there someday, but a third would end any doubt.”

» 2012, No. 3. “This might be the best part about the coming NFL season: Never again will we have to worry about the Giants head coach being on the hot seat, not after a second Super Bowl title put him on our Mount Rushmore of football coaches.”

» 2011, No. 13. “The Giants showed faith in him despite another playoff-free season, extending his contract for a year. Now, with the Eagles loading up in free agency and his own team hampered by departures, he’ll have an even bigger challenge to win the NFC East this year.”

» 2010, No. 14. “… will the Giants head coach, facing an important season three years removed from Super Bowl glory, keep his team on top in this market after the defensive collapse last winter?”

» 2009, No. 16. “The Super Bowl-winning coach is already on the Mount Rushmore of Giants coaches — and another one could put him on equal footing with the most adored coach of all, Bill Parcells.”

QUOTABLES

“I always get nervous before a game, but once you start playing, it all goes away. Probably right before the game, I’ll be a little nervous, but when I step on the field and get that first hit in, I’m good to go.” -Justin Pugh
