TUCK APPEARS ON USA NETWORK’S “NECESSARY ROUGHNESS”

Back in January, Justin Tuck thought his big break came when he was featured in the animated series “NFL Rush Zone” on Nickelodeon. But last night was his true premiere. The two-time Super Bowl champion appeared in an episode of USA Network’s “Necessary Roughness,” a scripted drama series revolving around the pro football world.

“If there’s an opportunity to do more acting after football,” Tuck told ESPNNewYork.com, “then I’ll explore that. But right now my focus is family and football.”

NFL’S TOP 10 RECEIVING CORPS

NFL.com ranked the best receiving corps across the league — including tight ends — and the Giants’ passing attack came in at No. 4, behind the Cowboys, Broncos, and the Falcons, who claimed the top spot.

“When healthy, Nicks is one of just a dozen NFL wide receivers capable of drawing and beating double coverage,” Chris Wesseling wrote. “Cruz is the only player in the NFL with at least 80 receptions, 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns in each of the past two seasons. Randle should be an upgrade on Domenik Hixon in the third receiver role.”

Also included behind New York: Packers, Saints, Seahawks, Cardinals, Colts, and Eagles.

ESPN’S JAWORSKI RANKS ELI MANNING NO. 8 ON QB COUNTDOWN

NFL analyst Ron Jaworski continued his evaluation of each starting quarterback around the league, ranking Eli Manning No. 8, one spot ahead of Houston’s Matt Schaub. Coming off his second Super Bowl victory, Manning was ranked No. 5 a year ago.

“After a 2012 season in which he was not quite as consistent in some areas and other quarterbacks improved, I have dropped Manning to No. 8. But there’s no question he remains one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, capable of big-time throws in critical situations,” Jaworski said.

“While Manning is not No. 1 on my board, there’s no question as he enters his 10th NFL season, he’s a high-level quarterback with all the skills I look for. Manning plays the position the way it needs to be played to be successful. It starts from the pocket. I talked last year about Manning’s improvement in progression reading. One area he doesn’t get enough credit is the pre-snap phase of the game.”

Jaworski added: “In this era of defensive innovation and evolving and challenging schemes, the ability to control the game at the line of scrimmage is a critical attribute. Manning is outstanding at that.

“Manning has reached the point in his career where we no longer need to discuss his play on an annual basis. He’s a steady, consistent, top-level NFL quarterback. He’s smart, he’s aware, and he can handle a high volume of offense. There are not many better quarterbacks than Eli Manning.”

With the remaining top seven being unveiled in the coming days, here’s a look at the countdown as it currently stands:

No. 32 Matt Flynn
No. 31 Jake Locker

No. 30 Kevin Kolb
No. 29 Chad Henne
No. 28 Mark Sanchez
No. 27 Christian Ponder
No. 26 Brandon Weeden
No. 25 Michael Vick
No. 24 Ryan Tannehill
No. 23 Carson Palmer
No. 22 Sam Bradford
No. 21 Josh Freeman

No. 20 Alex Smith
No. 19 Andy Dalton
No. 18 Cam Newton
No. 17 Philip Rivers
No. 16 Matthew Stafford
No. 15 Tony Romo
No. 14 Jay Cutler
No. 13 Robert Griffin III
No. 12 Russell Wilson
No. 11 Colin Kaepernick

No. 10 Andrew Luck
No. 9 Matt Schaub
No. 8 Eli Manning

Eli Manning remembers time as camper

Posted by Dan Salomone on July 15, 2013 – 4:55 pm

It wasn’t long ago Eli Manning was running around as a camper at his family’s passing academy in Louisiana. Or, actually, it was.

It just doesn’t seem that way.

Before the two-time Super Bowl MVP embarks on his 10th NFL season, the Giants’ quarterback co-hosted the annual Manning Passing Academy, held this past weekend at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, La. Owned and operated by the patriarch, Archie, and the three sons, Cooper, Peyton and Eli, the camp began 18 years ago and has settled at that location for the last eight summers.

mpaBefore the Super Bowls, before being a first overall draft pick, before being an All-American, Eli was a sponge at the camps, soaking up everything he could as he rose through the ranks.

“I enjoyed coming and getting taught by different players,” he told The Times-Picayune. “We had some college and NFL players, a lot of high school and college coaches getting taught different drills by them and running around. So those were fun times, and I still love coming here because I remember what it was like to be that kid, hungry to learn more football, trying to get better at the drills and better at throwing. So I try to work with them and make sure they’re having a great time.”

Now a main attraction, Eli again carried on the Manning family tradition at the camp this year by welcoming 1,200 quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends. A variety of college and professional players and coaches served as counselors, including Alabama’s A.J. McCarron and Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel.

“It was pretty cool,” said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, who was in Louisiana covering the academy. “They’ve got about 35-40 quarterbacks that come in as counselors. They coach the kids during the day, and then the first and the last day of camp, they put on a little show where they do a passing tree with Peyton and Eli. And I’ve got to tell you something, Peyton and Eli, they don’t just lend their name to a camp. These guys are coaching kids all day long in the heat of Louisiana. It’s awesome what the Manning family does.”

Kevin Boothe, Andre Brown promote Read Across America

Posted by Dan Salomone on July 11, 2013 – 2:59 pm

Each year, the Giants are proud to participate in the National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program by visiting numerous schools in the greater Metropolitan area. Continuing the tradition this offseason, players like Kevin Boothe and Stevie Brown put down their playbooks for a day and traded them in for Dr. Seuss stories to read to students at local schools.

Boothe, who was a three-time All-Ivy League offensive lineman at Cornell and knows the value of school at a young age, read to students at Huber Street Elementary School in Secaucus, N.J.

“Reading is very important,” Boothe said. “And in order to achieve your goals in life, it all begins here in school and with reading. To see their energy and their passion, it’s great. I enjoy coming to schools every year, and it’s been a blast.”

“When you see someone like Kevin Boothe come out and say that he would love to be here to read, these kids, their eyes open up and say, ‘Wow, this is a New York Giant that loves to read,’” said Linda Wilhelm, principal of Huber Street. “So to have him come out here to foster the love of reading is really important to all of us.”

Meanwhile, Brown, a product of the University of Michigan, pulled up a seat in front of hundreds of third and fourth graders gathered in the Lyndhurst High School gymnasium.

“It’s always good to give back to the community because they come to support us,” Brown said. “So it’s the least we can do – come back to and give back to them. I still read now for fun, so it’s good if they start young…You get to see the excitement they have and how much joy they have just seeing us come.”

From top to bottom, NFL.com’s Marc Sessler stacked up which players he would want ready to backup the lead signal caller. The Giants’ David Carr came in at No. 21 behind Pittsburgh’s Bruce Gradkowski and ahead of Atlanta’s Dominique Davis. Here is a look at Sessler’s Top 10:

1. Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins
2. Kyle Orton, Dallas Cowboys
3. Chad Henne, Jacksonville Jaguars (projecting Blaine Gabbert to start in Week 1)
4. Chase Daniel, Kansas City Chiefs
5. Kevin Kolb, Buffalo Bills (projecting EJ Manuel to start in Week 1)
6. Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles

10. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tennessee Titans

“He is absolutely elite. Everybody talks about slot receivers having to have 100-catch seasons. To me, it’s not about quantity, it’s about quality. And when you look at Victor Cruz the last two seasons, he has led the NFL in production on third down. So I look at Victor Cruz as elite because he does a number of things. Yes, we compare him to Wes Welker. He runs great routes. He’s very precise getting out and creating separation. [In the 77-yard touchdown that clinched a win against the Redskins in Week 7 of 2012], it was bracket coverage. He was double covered. He ran through it. He has the speed that most slot receivers don’t.”Former Giants center and current NFL Network analyst Shaun O’Hara on Victor Cruz (READ MORE)

“My defensive mantra is just to be more consistent. To be more consistent and have more dog in us on a daily basis, on an every down basis. There were times out there, I felt,  that as a defensive unit we went out there and we played exceptional,  we played like the Super Bowl caliber team that we were. Then there were times we went out there and played like the 9-7 team that we were.  As a defensive unit you can’t have the ups and downs because we all know that defense wins the game. We all know that. With the quarterback that we have, with the offense we have, they are always going to put points on the board. We expect that.
