NFL ANNOUNCES NEW PRO BOWL FORMAT

The NFL announced today it would be adding a fantasy football-like draft to the event among other changes…

“Gone is the familiar AFC vs. NFC match-up that has existed since 1971.  Instead, players will be selected without regard to conference in voting by fans, coaches and players.  For example, the top six quarterbacks following voting will earn distinction as All-Stars, regardless of how many are from AFC or NFC teams.

Players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft, in which two leading vote getters will join two NFL.com fantasy football champions – who will attend the Pro Bowl – to draft players.  One of these champions will earn their spot as part of Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year program, which provides NFL.com fans a chance to be rewarded for their fantasy football skills.  The other champion can compete for a Pro Bowl role by playing at NFL.com/fantasy.ich two leading vote getters will join two NFL.com fantasy football champions – who will attend the Pro Bowl – to draft players.  One of these champions will earn their spot as part of Lenovo’s Fantasy Coach of the Year program, which provides NFL.com fans a chance to be rewarded for their fantasy football skills.  The other champion can compete for a Pro Bowl role by playing at NFL.com/fantasy.”

COUGHLIN REVEALS PARCELL’S SOFTER SIDE

Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin told a couple of stories about Hall of Famer Bill Parcells to the Post’s Paul Schwartz.

“Bill was a guy who on the practice field knew exactly what he wanted and his expectations were very high. When he conducted staff meetings there wasn’t a lot of excess discussion about things, it was expressed, how we practiced, we put our practices together that way, our gameplans that way, our Saturday night meetings, the way in which we played the game. He had his hand in everything obviously that was conducted.

He made a call or sent a very, very nice note both times we won the Super Bowl. Very personal. Bill has a great knack, he says exactly what is on his mind and he says it exactly the way he wants to say it. He left me a very nice message when I got fired in Jacksonville, too. Different times after different games when I was at Boston College, we beat Notre Dame and he left me a message and said some nice things about how the team played and that type of thing.”

QUOTABLES

“A goal at the end of the year is to always play in a Super Bowl and to win a Super Bowl and its good to have those long term goals that you want to have. You have to make the short term goals as well and we have to each day get better at something and each practice be focused on doing our jobs well and doing it at a high level and so it’s kind of good to have it there as a reminder, but we have to also worry about this next practice and these preseason games and handle our business and doing everything well to make sure we are getting into the playoffs and hopefully be able to make a run.” – QB Eli Manning on the Giants’ objectives

Daily Blitz (7/29): Giants picked to win NFC East

ESPN’S JOHN CLAYTON PICKS G-MEN IN NFC EAST

Over the weekend, as the Giants began Training Camp, ESPN’s John Clayton picked Big Blue to rise to the top of the NFC East in this video.

In response to Clayton’s pick, ESPN’s NFC East blogger Dan Graziano said he wasn’t “overly enthralled with the Giants as a favorite right now”, but “…you never can rule out the Giants, and they’re likely the safest pick. Their ceiling doesn’t feel overly high, but you do feel as though you know where the floor is. They’re unlikely to be a bad team, and they always contend until the final weeks. Manning and Tom Coughlin are the cornerstones at the key positions of quarterback and coach who make sure of that every year.”

TWEET OF THE DAY

QUOTABLES

“Physical, New York Giant defense; tough, physical and hard-nosed defense. We’re not that far removed from that and hopefully we’ll get right back to it. You have to get an identity. You have to represent something. You have to be there week in and week out. You have to have that kind of consistency and you have to control the line of scrimmage. You have to stop the run first before you can rush the pass and we’re capable of both, but we’re certainly going to get tested in both areas.” – Coach Tom Coughlin on what he’s looking from his team this year

ESPN: 25 UNDER 25

Mel Kiper ranked Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul 13th in a list of ESPN’s 25 best players 25 years old or younger.

” Current: Entering his fourth NFL season, it’s amazing JPP still qualifies for this list. After his breakout 2011 campaign, I think many are surprised he isn’t higher. Sack totals don’t paint a complete picture, but JPP’s fell off from 16.5 in 2011 to 6.5 last season, a decent enough dip to cause an ounce of concern. The interesting thing about Pierre-Paul is he is now one of the best 4-3 defensive ends in the NFL against the run. He has grown from project to steady starter.

Future: Pierre-Paul has become a pretty complete defensive end. The question now is whether he can recapture the pass-rushing magic of 2011. Just because he has NFL experience doesn’t mean he’s not still picking up new tricks at 24.”

TOP 5: Andrew Luck, JJ Watt, Von Miller, Russell Wilson, and Robert Griffin III

FANTASY FOOTBALL: BREAKOUT PLAYERS AND SLEEPERS TO TARGET

It’s time to start thinking about fantasy football again, and while you’re brainstorming a team name, NFL.com put together an early draft kit, which included a few Giants among breakout players and sleepers.

Breakout Players to Target:

WR Hakeem Nicks

“This might be the biggest risk-reward breakout candidate on the list, but there’s a lot to like about Nicks heading into this season. For one, he’s back at 100 percent health. The North Carolina product is also in a contract year, which means he’ll be even more motivated to produce at a high level in an effort to cash in at the end of the 2013 campaign. Being that he’ll be taken as a No. 2 fantasy wideout, Nicks could turn into a major steal in drafts.” — Michael Fabiano

RB David Wilson

“With Ahmad Bradshaw gone, expect the 2012 first-rounder to build on those flashes we saw last season. His ability to catch the ball means he doesn’t have to leave the field on third down, which makes his value to you all the greater.” — Dave Dameshek

TE Brandon Myers

“How am I able to call someone who finished in the top-10 in fantasy points at his position last year a ‘breakout candidate’ for 2013? When you’re a tight end, being ranked 10th isn’t all that great, but when you’re going to make the jump to a top-three player in your category in just one year? Yeah, that’s a breakout. The Giants have shown no matter who their tight end is, Eli Manning is going to get the ball to him – whether it’s Jeremy Shockey, Jake Ballard, Kevin Boss or Martellus Bennett. Myers has more talent than most of the players I’ve just mentioned. He’s a perfect fit in New York’s offense, who, unlike Oakland, actually has threats on the outside that will open things up for Myers underneath. He caught 79 balls with the Raiders last year, he’ll approach 100 with the G-Men.” — Jason Smith

Sleepers:

RB Andre Brown

“David Wilson is going to get the headlines, but Brown is going to get the touchdowns. The Giants love to pound the ball when they get inside the 10-yard line, and Brown will get repeated chances to score every time they do so. He plays with a mean streak that’s part desperation, part desire. He wants the football, and he wants to get in the end zone. He can be a solid flex player for you this season, and he’ll be available in the eighth round or later.” — Jason Smith

TWEET OF THE DAY

QUOTABLES

“There is no such thing as ‘maintain.’ You have to get better all of the time or you are going the wrong way. And you have heard it as a cliché, said many times, what I firmly believe and I think that good players all know it, as you physically get older, you have to compensate for that with continued growth with technique, continued growth in the deepening of understanding of what is taking place out there, so that you can compensate for whatever that loss of skill level is. So as a receiver, as a running back, as a lineman, if you are not doing that, then pretty soon you are going to be on the bench.”Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride on Eli Manning (WATCH PREVIEW REPORT)

THOMAS FEELS LIKE A ROOKIE AGAIN

Cornerback Terrell Thomas took to his blog (www.terrellthomas24.com) on Tuesday, thanking his fans, doctors, trainers and the Giants’ medical staff for helping him through his third knee injury this past year.

He also shed light on what we can expect to see from him as training camp opens up this weekend. While the plan is to start off slow, Thomas believes he can be an X factor this season. Below is a portion of what he wrote:

“The Giants have a great plan for me this upcoming season; we are going to start off slow like counting my reps and going in that direction.  I am excited about camp starting this week, I feel like a big question mark on defense and I love it. That makes me feel like a rookie again, nobody knows what to expect from me other than that I was a good player.  Just like when I was coming into the league as a good player coming out of college, so I love that feeling.

“I feel like I am the X factor for the defense, I think I can be a big key for our defense this year as far as my physical play combined with my knowledge, communication and leadership skills.  I truly don’t care if I play corner, nickel or safety.  As long as I am on field; I feel I can be very productive.  First I need to get through one practice then one week of practices then a month of practices, then one game and game after that.  The only goal this year for me is to play and get through sixteen games.  I haven’t played football in two years so that is the biggest goal for me.  Whatever else happens after is a plus.”

QUOTABLES

“Josh Brown and David Buehler are competing right now. They’ve both shown some good things. We’re looking for consistency out of that position. Lawrence was consistent and did a nice job, so we’re looking for that and how well they kick off after that is a big factor.” — Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn spoke on the kicker competition (WATCH SPECIAL TEAMS PREVIEW REPORT)

The only thing you can do is just get better from it and make sure you get better from those corrections and make sure you just never get complacent because we’ve had games where we would play outstanding and then we had games where we didn’t play so good. GIANTS NO. 13 IN PFT’S PRESEASON POWER RANKINGS

The team over at ProFootballTalk has been unveiling its preseason power rankings, and the Giants, who are set to hold their first training camp practice on Saturday, came in at No. 13, one spot ahead of the Dallas Cowboys.

“If the NFL seeded every team one through 32 last January and had a playoff tourney, the Giants would have been a chic sleeper pick to win it all,” Mike Wilkening wrote. “Everyone knows New York is a serious threat no matter its seed.”

Looking at the NFC East, the Giants were second behind the Redskins (No. 11 overall) and ahead of the Cowboys (No. 14) and Eagles (No. 26).

Right now we have him playing the will position as well as a safety and so I really like his size and his mental capacity, but he is a rookie. ROSS SEES “THAT HUNGER AGAIN” WITH THE GIANTS

A starter in both Super Bowl victories in the Tom Coughlin era, Aaron Ross was playing for the Jaguars last year when the Giants were unable to follow up their last Lombardi Trophy and missed the postseason altogether. But Ross has returned and so has the hunger for another title among his teammates, whom he remained close to during his stint in Jacksonville.

“I’ve been seeing everybody has that hunger again like the two other Super Bowls,” said Ross, according to Newsday, speaking at the premiere of “Sanya’s Glam & Gold.” “I’m not sure what happened last year, but a lot of mental busts and maybe a little bit of complacency set in after the Super Bowl. But this year, you can tell with coach Coughlin — starts with him — how hard he’s pushing the team, how hard he’s pushing everybody.” – READ
