Season-ticket holders donate 3K tickets

Posted by Giants.com on April 11, 2013 – 2:02 pm

Thanks to generous season ticket holders, the New York Giants proudly announce they were able to donate nearly 3,000 tickets to United Way of New York City last season through the program “NY Giants-Touchdown for Teens.”

united-way-lock-up-cmykBoth the Giants and Jets (“Tix for Kids”) have collaborated with UWNYC to develop the charitable ticket distribution programs, which allow season ticket holders of New York’s two NFL franchises to donate otherwise unused game tickets to children and youth participating in community-based organizations throughout New York City.

Each ticket donation provided the opportunity for a child to attend a New York Giants football game accompanied by a chaperone, creating a unique experience as many of them have never been to a professional football game.

United Way and the National Football League partnership has existed for more than 40 years, making it the longest running sports/charity partnership of its kind.  Together, both organizations are working to strengthen America’s communities.

Thank you, season ticket holders and United Way of New York City!

Tom Coughlin ranked No. 2 coach in NFL

Posted by Dan Salomone on April 9, 2013 – 9:00 am

coughlinbelDespite Tom Coughlin missing the postseason with a winning record and Bill Belichick falling short of his sixth Super Bowl appearance in 2012, the two decorated head coaches still remain the standard in their profession.

At least the people at NFL.com think so.

NFL.com columnist Adam Schein ranked the top coaches in the NFL, and Coughlin came in at No. 2 behind the Patriots’ Belichick.

“Like Belichick, he’s a future Hall of Famer,” Schein wrote. “Coughlin has two rings and gets his Giants to overachieve. He’s a fantastic motivator and in-game coach.”

Here is a look at “The Schein Nine” list of top NFL coaches:

1) Bill Belichick, New England Patriots

2) Tom Coughlin, New York Giants

3) Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers

4) Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco 49ers

5) John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens

6) Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

7) Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints

8) Mike Shanahan, Washington Redskins

9) Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs

CB Aaron Ross readies for faster division

Posted by Dan Salomone on April 8, 2013 – 9:00 am

The NFC East has picked up a few steps since Aaron Ross last played in it. During his stint in Jacksonville, Robert Griffin III emerged with Washington, and the Eagles this offseason ushered in their new coach Chip Kelly, known for his up-tempo offense.

But speed is no stranger to Ross.

His wife and fellow University of Texas product, Sanya Richards-Ross, is a four-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field, and trains in Waco, home of Griffin’s alma mater of Baylor. So Ross knows world-class speed when he sees it, and knows it will be a faster division than the one he last faced as a member of the Giants in the 2011 Super Bowl run.

“It’s always strong, it’s a fierce rivalry every week when you’re playing against the NFC East,” Ross said recently on NFL Network. “Like RGIII, my wife trains in Waco, and I had a chance to see him train when he was in college. So he’s a beast and he’s come into the league and is pretty much ripping it up. And Philadelphia is always good and the Cowboys always have a stacked roster, so you never know what to expect from those guys. The NFC East is a great division to play in. It seems like it’s always a primetime game.”

Having four Pro Bowl quarterbacks in the division only ups that excitement level for cornerbacks like Ross, who also talked about what future players at his position can expect in a pass-heavy NFL.

“It’s a passing league, so I think it’s a great time for a competitive corner to come into the league,” Ross said with the NFL Draft later this month. “You need about four or five corners on your roster, so it’s a great time for corners. Coming into the league, you have great receivers, of course great quarterbacks, and you get a chance to show your skills off.

Coach Coughlin sends book to Mets’ Wright

Posted by Dan Salomone on April 4, 2013 – 12:11 pm

Tom Coughlin has been discovering that sometimes the pen is mightier than the sword. In his latest book “Earn the Right to Win,” the Giants’ head coach stresses preparation as the key to success in everything — on and off the gridiron.

PHOTOS: GIANTS ON THE MOUND

PHOTOS: GIANTS ON THE MOUND

And that includes the baseball diamond.

New York Mets third baseman and newly-named captain David Wright will find that out as he now has reading material for the team’s road trips. Coughlin recently had a copy of his book delivered to Wright before Opening Day with an inscription congratulating him on the honor of being named captain.

“I just appreciate the way a young man like David represents his organization on and off the field,” Coughlin told the New York Post. “Guys like David Wright, Derek Jeter and Eli [Manning] are cut out of the same cloth.

“They are blessed with great ability, and they understand the responsibility that comes along with it. They understand what it means to represent their respective organizations, and they know that the people of the metropolitan area respect somebody who rolls up the sleeves and goes to work and leads by example, not words.”

This wasn’t the first time Coughlin has reached out to the Met.

Coughlin wrote a note to Wright a few years ago, saying he enjoyed his style of play. Wright, according to the article, never forgot that and said it “was almost like a football pregame pep-talk, it was nice. I got it framed and it is displayed proudly.”

GM Jerry Reese ranked among top evaluators

Posted by Dan Salomone on April 3, 2013 – 9:00 am

reeseIn 24 years as a general manager in the NFL, Bill Polian knows something about evaluating talent. Consequently, he also can evaluate the evaluators, and he believes Jerry Reese is one of the best in the business.

Polian, a former Bills, Panthers, and Colts executive and current analyst for ESPN Insider, broke down the top six evaluators in his eyes, which included the Giants general manager.

“He goes out and finds players who fit what head coach Tom Coughlin wants, which points to one of his greatest strengths as a GM,” the six-time NFL Executive of the Year wrote about Reese. “Not only is Jerry a terrific judge of talent, he’s also an excellent manager in the way he includes his staff and the coaches in the process. Throughout the organization, every scout is working from the same script and knows that their voice will be heard in the player-evaluation process.

“Another defining characteristic for Jerry is that he’s not afraid to take a chance on a player who he believes will fit their system. Mark Herzlich is a good example. Many teams were scared of his battle with cancer, but he’s helped the Giants. And identifying Victor Cruz as a player to develop can’t be overlooked — remember, they kept him through an entire season where Cruz sat on IR. Reese and Coughlin will now unearth last year’s first-rounder, RB David Wilson. While the former Virginia Tech back had a rough start following a Week 1 fumble, he should be a strong asset for the Giants going forward after the team had to make financial decisions at the position this offseason.”

Also making Polian’s list were: Ozzie Newsome (Ravens), Thomas Dimitroff (Falcons), Ted Thompson (Packers), Trent Baalke (49ers), and Kevin Colbert (Steelers).
