There is little consolation taken from winning seasons when they fall short of the playoffs. But that’s what the Giants have done two of the last three years — winning 10 games in 2010 and nine this past season — and that is why president and CEO John Mara doesn’t think they have to tear the whole thing down.
Having a two-time Super Bowl MVP in Eli Manning helps, too.
“He’s years old. He’s got a lot of years left,” Mara told reporters Thursday after a press conference announcing plans for next year’s Super Bowl, which will be played in MetLife Stadium and feature lead-up events throughout the New York-New Jersey area. “I think our window is still pretty wide. I think as long as he’s under center, we have a chance to win.”
Speaking of chances, the Giants will look back this offseason at all of the ones they failed to capitalize on in 2012. For Mara, the consecutive losses on the road to the Falcons and the Super Bowl-bound Ravens stick out in particular. The Giants lost Weeks 15 and 16 by a combined score of 67-14, letting the division lead slip away.
“Obviously, we were very disappointed not being in the postseason,” he said. “I haven’t quite gotten over that yet, particularly back-to-back games in Atlanta and Baltimore. Sometimes you go through things like that, and it just strengthens our resolve to put a better team on the field next year.”
Mara added: “You have to have patience. You can’t get too high when you are winning and too low when you are losing. You just have to have some confidence in your organization, and I have confidence in our organization. We have a franchise quarterback, and we’ve got a lot of good players on defense, but obviously a couple parts were missing, and that’s something we need to look at.”
