Coughlin, Reid not looking past Sunday

Posted by Dan Salomone on December 27, 2012 – 4:22 pm

reidcoughlinCoaches don’t win a combined 300 NFL games by looking ahead. That’s why, true to form, neither Tom Coughlin nor Andy Reid can see past Sunday; their DNA won’t allow it.

While Coughlin (162-128 overall) doesn’t want to hear about any playoff scenarios and Reid (140-101) dismisses talk on his future in Philadelphia, both are focusing their energy on what they can control. And that is Week 17: Eagles at Giants.

“You know, I really haven’t gone there,” Reid said Wednesday on a conference call with Giants beat reporters. “I normally don’t do those kinds of things; it’s hard to look forward and look behind in this business, so you just look straight ahead and at the opponent. We’ve got the holiday weekend and all that stuff going on so I’m really focused in on just getting ready for the Giants.”

Sunday will be the 20th meeting, including postseason, between the two coaches since Coughlin took over the Giants in 2004. That’s more than enough time to figure each other out, but Coughlin is prepared for anything this week.

“I don’t necessarily… The situation may call for something,” Coughlin responded when asked if he expects a lot out of the ordinary from Reid in the finale. “There may be something that comes up, which is a little bit out of the ordinary, but I think that they’ve played themselves to a pretty good spot and that they’ll play the game out and see how it goes. He may have something planned, like we do. If it’s not called for, then you’re not going to see it.”

Playoff implications aside, a win would pull Coughlin to an even 10-10 regular-season ledger against the Eagles all-time. He is currently 9-10 against them (7-10 with the Giants and 2-0 with Jacksonville) and 0-2 in the postseason, both of which were with the Giants.

Reid may have the upper hand, but he wouldn’t necessarily call their rivalry a “fun” one.

“I don’t know if fun is the thing,” Reid said. “But the rivalry… I think that’s one of the awesome things in the NFL that it’s developed into that or it’s probably always been that way, but it surely has been since Tom and I have been here and so I think both teams enjoy playing each other and look forward to the challenge of playing each other.”

And this is a good thing too. When players don’t perform, fools change coaches….as if that makes players better. It’s change for change’s sake and a bad sign.

Regardless of the outcome of any game, it is time we recognize that our offense is stale. We are stifling Eli behind this most predictable offense in the league. Never enough play action, too many timing patterns. Bottom line is Gilbride must go. We need a spark to our offense along with upgrades on our o-line. We need to seriously upgrade our LBs. Our best LB this year was without a doubt Chase Blackburn. I am sure he graded out at the top of the class.
