TE Bennett has answer to Browns D

Posted by Dan Salomone on October 4, 2012 – 5:10 pm

While there are yards to be had against Cleveland, tight ends haven’t been finding many.

The Browns are currently 28th in the NFL giving up 286.0 yards per game, but opposing tight ends are managing just a sliver of that with an average of 31.0. Those numbers include Dennis Pitta (Ravens), Scott Chandler (Bills), Jermaine Gresham (Bengals), and the Eagles’ Brent Celek, who leads the NFL in yards at the position through the first quarter of the season.

Sunday will be Martellus Bennett’s crack at the averages.

“Every tight end in the NFL is different,” Bennett said. “I think the guys they played against are all different from the way that I play and the things that we do here in this offense. It’ll be a battle.”

Bennett also credited Cleveland’s linebackers for limiting opposing tight ends, just like the Eagles did last week against him when he was held to one catch for two yards. Previously, Bennett, who has 187 yards on the year, had scored a touchdown in each of his first three games.

This week, Bennett expects to see a dosage of weakside linebacker Craig Robertson, who is tied for a team-high 27 tackles despite starting only once this season. Then there is the man in the middle, D’Qwell Jackson, who has two interceptions and 3.0 sacks this season.

“I think No. 52 is one of the best linebackers in the league in my eyes, watching him on tape and the things that he does,” Bennett said of Jackson, who led the NFL in tackles in 2008 and the AFC in 2011. “But we try to get and develop some mismatches out there and do some things where I get a chance to get more opportunities than I got last week.

“He reads the quarterback’s eyes and takes a lot away from the inside. They do a good job of reading the quarterback’s eyes and following him. So it’s going to take good depth on routes to develop those levels. Then Eli is going to have to look guys off here and there. So whatever they do, we’ll have an answer for it.”

Inside the Locker Room: Tuck, Bradshaw, Pierre-Paul

Posted by Giants.com on October 4, 2012 – 3:36 pm

As the Giants move closer to Sunday, player speak about facing their Week 5 opponent, the Cleveland Browns…

DE Justin Tuck
On 2008 loss to the Browns…
“We definitely didn’t forget about it, that’s a good lesson for us to learn, I think a lot of people look at that record and see an 0-4 team and that this is going to be a cake walk and that couldn’t be farther than the truth, five or six plays and they could be 4-0.”

DE Jason Pierre-Paul
On how he’s feeling on the field…
“I feel like I’m kind of stressed a little bit, I made an oath to myself to go out there and have fun. I’m going to go out there and have fun like last year, just running around like a little kid.”

RB Ahmad Bradshaw
On getting the ground game going…
“I mean that’s just the key, we want to go in early and start fast. If we can do that, I think we’ll be succesful. We work hard, we finish on this team. If we can just get it to the end we’ll be fine.”

Fantasy Preview: Thursday Night Football

Posted by Fantasy_101 on October 4, 2012 – 9:21 am

The views expressed in this article are not of the New York Football Giants but those of an independent Fantasy Expert.

Andre Roberts, WR, Cardinals

Last Week: 6 catches, 118 yards, 2 TD’s, 9 targets

Roberts and Kolb seem to have some chemistry early in the 2012 season.  The Cardinals’ second-year receiver from The Citadel already has four touchdowns through the first 4 weeks of the season, which is tied for best in the league with Vernon Davis, Scott Chandler and Heath Miller. Though the Rams secondary ranks 11th against the pass, expect Roberts to produce at a respectable level in a tough match-up.

Brandon Gibson, WR, Rams

Last Week: 2 catches, 28 yards, 4 targets

Gibson got off to a hot start in the first two weeks of the season, putting back to back 50-plus receiving games, with a touchdown grab in each.  In the past two weeks, Gibson has a combined 4 catches, 47 yards and no scores.  With the Rams suffering injuries at the running back position, Gibson’s role should be well expanded come game time.

Ryan Williams, RB, Cardinals

Last Week: 13 carries, 26 yards

After a rough last game, Ryan Williams will have something to prove and showcase on Thursday Night Football against the rival Rams.  Williams had a great week three, rushing for 83 yards off 13 carries against an impressive run stuffing defense in the Philadelphia  Eagles.  Hoping to erase memories of week four, Williams has the opportunity to do just that, when he faces the 26th ranked rush defense in the National Football League.

Daily Blitz: Browns’ Shurmur no stranger to Giants

Posted by Dan Salomone on October 4, 2012 – 9:00 am

The Giants and Browns have only met twice in the Tom Coughlin era, but that doesn’t mean Cleveland head coach Pat Shurmur doesn’t know a thing or two about New York.

Shurmur spent 10 seasons in the NFC East with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2008. He began as a tight ends coach before serving as the quarterbacks coach for seven years. So the Giants are no strangers to him, especially Eli Manning.

He was asked about the Giants’ quarterback during a conference call yesterday with local reporters.

“Eli, heck, I have a great deal of respect for Eli,” said Shurmur, who was offensive coordinator of the Rams before joining the Browns last season. “When I was in Philly, I was involved in over 20 of these games against the Giants.  At any point in the game, Eli can get hot, and he has the confidence to lead his team to victory.  I’m sure the guys in the huddle with him know that.  You have to play them all the way out, and it’s very important that you keep trying to get pressure on him because, regardless of the quarterback, that’s the best way to disrupt them.”
